world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men.

O Thou, Who on the sixth day madest man in Thine own image;

R. Make speed to save us.

MATINS; OR MORNING PRAYER.

First let all kneel in silence and each pray privately for a short space.

Then the lesson for the day of the week; after which the Master shall say,

Let us humbly confess our sins before ALMIGHTY GOD.

All.

Confession.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, most merciful FATHER, We have sinned against Thee exceedingly in thought, word, and deed.

We have rebelled against Thy sovereign Will, Neglected Thy Holy Counsels and broken Thy righteous laws;

We have sinned, O LORD, we have sinned exceedingly, and are no more worthy to be called Thy children; yet cast us not out of Thy presence. But for the sake of Thy dear SoN, our LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, give us penitent and contrite hearts, and grant us pardon and peace. Amen.

Prayer for Pardon.

O Blessed JESUS our GOD and SAVIOUR,* Who didst graciously look on Thy apostle S. Peter, when he had thrice denied Thee, and didst cause him to weep bitterly; * Who didst say to the penitent malefactor who confessed Thee, " To-day shalt thou be with Me in Paradise ;"* Who didst grant forgiveness to the sinner who washed Thy feet with her tears, saying, "Her sins which are many are forgiven, for she loved much;"* The good GOD, Who by His prophet Nathan gave pardon to David upon his confession, and hath taught us if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness;

Grant to us forgiveness of all our sins; Those which we remember to our shame; Those which we have forgotten: Deliver us from the punishment we have deserved; And enable us to stand before His judgment-seat uncondemned: Through Thy merits, O Blessed LORD, Who didst die for us; to whom with the FATHER and the HOLY GHOST be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Our FATHER, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;

But deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom,

The power, and the glory;

[blocks in formation]

Here the special office for the Season may be said, or this which follows to the Lauds; the Psalm and Lesson altered at discretion of Master.

Text. His compassions fail not, They are new every morning.

Hymn.

New every morning is the Love

Our wakening and uprising prove,

Through sleep and darkness safely brought,

Restored to life and power and thought.

New mercies each returning day,

Hover around us while we pray.

New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of GOD, new hopes of heaven.

Antiphon. As long as I live, will I magnify Thee.

Psalm. The heavens declare the glory of GoD: and the firmament showeth His handy work. One day telleth another and one night certifieth another.
