ST. MARTIN'S LANE.

PREFACE.

THE publication of this Handbook, begun by Dr. Royle during his period of office as Dean of the Medical Department of King's College, is designed to inform the Students fully of all the advantages which they may enjoy in the College, and to make them acquainted with the various regulations to which they will be expected to conform.

It is but just to the Founders of this College to state, that the first attempt to give a Collegiate Education to the Medical Students of London was made by them. An important feature of the education which may be imparted here, is that within the same walls the Student may find not only the most ample opportunities of cultivating medical knowledge, but also the means of acquiring all the literary and scientific attainments which form the best foundation for medical skill. And, whilst preparing himself for the practice of an arduous profession, he associates not only with those who tread the same path with himself, but likewise with young men who are destined for all the other callings in life.

It was in 1836, that rooms were first fitted up in the College for the reception of Resident Students. In 1841, Scholarships were founded, and this was the first instance of endowments of this kind applicable to Medical Students since the few exhibitions of the same nature which were established at Oxford and Cambridge in former days.

In the present year the accommodation for Resident Students has been extended on a plan somewhat different from that hitherto adopted. Those who wish to live alone, and to enjoy the privacy of a College life, so well suited for study, may occupy rooms in the College. But those, who prefer to combine the possession of the society of their fellow Students, with the order and system of a well regulated family, may live in the rooms adjoining the College, under the friendly direction of a Medical Tutor who resides in the same house, and joins the Students at their meals.
