With this book Lieber presented the first systematic work on political science that appeared in America. Some of the topics covered are definitions of liberty, Anglican liberty, high treason, quartering soldiers, independence of the judiciary, institutional government, and Vox Populi Vox Dei. Includes an Index and 16 appendices, including "A paper on the abuse of the pardoning power," "Magna Charta of King John," "Bill of rights, passed 1 William and Mary, sess. 2, ch. 2, 1689," "Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union between the states," "French charter of Louis XVIII and that adopted in the year 1830," etc. The first edition was published in 1853, when Dr. Lieber was a professor in the University of South Carolina; the second, enlarged by notes and corrected, appeared in 1859, two years after he had accepted a chair in Columbia College, New York. The second edition was exhausted when he died, October 2, 1872; and this Third Edition, Enlarged, was prepared posthumously.
