Excerpt from Lyrics and 'Bucolics: The Eclogues of Virgil, a Selection From the Odes of Horace, and the Legend of the Sibyll

Need I say more? If only my practice were equal to his theory, or my own, further preface would be superfluous; but the practice of preachers is apt to be below their own standard, and a translator's path notoriously lies betwixt Scylla and Charybdis. Few, if any, have ever yet steered clear of the shoals on either side, so it will be as well to apologize before hand for the aberrations of the pilot. I trust that my wish to be a faithful interpreter has not been marred either by lack of care or any misapprehension of my master's meaning; but lzumazzum act errare.
