I.

ON THE CHRONOLOGICAL SEQUENCE OF THE

COINS OF SYRACUSE.

INTRODUCTION.

It is with no small hesitation that I venture to publish the following remarks on the history of the coinage of Syracuse. So many celebrated numismatists and scholars have already written on this subject, that it may with some reason be objected that little, if anything, of im. portance remains to be said on the matter.

Nevertheless, after a long and careful study of the Syracusan series preserved in our national collection, I bave been led to hope that in the following survey I shall be able to contribute something of interest to the student of Greek numismatics, more especially as regards the chronological sequence of the coins in question. It appears to me that a great drawback to the usefulness of many catalogues is the method which has been generally adopted of keeping the metals apart; for, when gold, silver, and copper are separately described, we lose sight of the minute links, such as monograms, symbols, &c., whereby I hope to be able to connect the issues in the different metals, and thus to fix the date of many coins which, for want of comparison with other pieces the date
