1 Woe unto you that are full; for ye shall hunger. 2 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. 3 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright: at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Wine is a mocker; strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. 5 Woe unto them who are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink; and rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink that continue until night, till wine inflame them; that say, We will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant. 6 Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine, they that go to seek mixed wine. 7 They that count it pleasure to riot in the daytime, shall receive the reward of unrighteousness. 8 Be not amongst wine-bibbers, amongst riotous eaters of flesh; and run not with them to the same excess of riot: for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. 9 He that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. 1 CHASTITY AND MODESTY. This is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye shall abstain from fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, chambering, and wantonness; that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour, not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles, which know not God. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 3 Flee also youthful lusts. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul. 4 * Keep thyself pure: for unto the pure all things are pure but to them that are defiled nothing is pure, but even their mind and their conscience is defiled. 5 Walk not as other Gentiles walk; who being past feeling, have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness; and whom for this cause God hath given up unto vile affections, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: men and women working that which is unseemly, and against nature. 6 None of you shall approach unto any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness; ye shall not commit any of those abominable customs, which were committed by the nations which the Lord cast 1 Thess. iv. 4, 5. 7. 1 Tim. v. 22. For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. 1 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel; nor a Sodomite of the sons of Israel. 2 Flee fornication; for he that committeth fornication, sinneth against his own body. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. 3 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot ? God forbid. 4 * Know ye not that ye are the temple of God; and that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 5 Keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman: lust not after her beauty in thine heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt. 6 Remove thy way far from a strange woman, and come not nigh the door of her house; lest thou give thine honour unto others; lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, and say, How have I hated instruction, and despised reproof? 2 1 Cor. vi. 18. 13. 1 Deut. xxiii. 17. 4.1 Cor. iii. 16. 25. 27. 31 Cor. vi. 15. 5 Prov. vi. 24. 1 Let not thine heart decline to her ways; for her house is the way to hell. Thou goest after her as an ox goeth to the slaughter, till a dart strike through thy liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. 2 If mine heart hath been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door; this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase. * Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 4 To avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife; and let every woman have her own husband; for it is better to marry than to burn. And marriage is honourable in all; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Let the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. • Let the aged women likewise be in behaviour as becometh holiness; teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands; that the word of God be not blasphemed. 7 Let the men intreat the younger women as sisters, with all purity. 8 Fornication and all uncleanness, let it not be 1 Prov. vii. 25. 27. 22, 23. v. 28. 2 Job xxxi. 9. 11, 12. Heb. xiii. 4. 3 Matt. 5 1 Tim. v. 14. once named amongst you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient. 1 1 Put all filthy communication out of your mouth; for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of some in secret. 2 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man; neither shall a man put on a woman's garment for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord. 3 Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. * The Lord will reserve the unjust until the day of judgment, to be punished; but chiefly them that walk after the flesh, in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government: having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin. These, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, shall utterly perish in their own corruption; even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 5 Neither fornicators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 6 • No whoremonger nor unclean person hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 'Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. |
