JED'S BOY. "Jed" is a many times reprinted story that grew out of the Civil War. Now its author, Warren Lee Goss, has taken a nephew of Jed and placed him amid the scenes of the great war. The story is concerned with two boy friends on a New England farm. About one of them there has always been a mystery which grows more bafling when one of the boys suddenly deserts after his enlistment. The solution makes a climax that boy readers will find ent.rely satisfactory to their patriotism. (Crowell.)

HIGH BENTON. William Heyliger, who could pass a rigid examination on boy psychology, has written "High Benton" a story for boys which might be called a novel. It is the story of a boy's growth, mental and moral, and his development from a good-natured, indifferent child, whose horizon is bounded by the narrow confines of his own little town, into a manly youth, strong and wide-visioned. ready to blaze the trail of industry and civilization in far places. High Benton is one of those lively, intensely human boys who always manage to be in the midst of things and his life story will make interesting as well as profitable reading for any boy. (Appleton.)

BOYS SCOUTS IN THE WILDERNESS. Samuel Scoville, Jr., tells how a millionaire. lumber king who was cynical about the value of Scout training to boys put it to a severe test. He challenged a camp of Scouts to send two of their number up into his forest on the Canadian border without taking anything with them, not even food or clothes, to live thirty days. If they stood the test, they were to receive a camp in his great wilderness and he was to pay them double the value of anything GRIPED MY SERVE AND SHUT MY TEETH, COULD they found. How these two met the test is a

RALPH OSBORN STORIES. Commander Edward L. Beach, U. S. N., writes these stories of naval life for boy readers around the adventures of Ralph Osborn. He first tells of the hero's life as midshipman at Annapolis while "Midshipman Ralph Osborn at Sea" and "Ensign Ralph Osborn" continue his career at sea. (Wilde.)

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. Each year brings a new volume in this handsomely illustrated and bound series of classics for younger readers. Collectively they form a rarely stimulating introduction for any child to some of our best literature. This year's addition to the growing list is "The Last of the Mohicans"-a favorite with five generations of boys. N. C. Wyeth, who has 30 spiritedly illustrated Jules Verne, Stevenson and Lanier in earlier books of the series, has matched Cooper's colorful action and richly descriptive background with illustrations sure to make this a prized possession. (Scribner.)

THE HIDDEN AERIAL. Many boy readers who know Lewis E. Theiss' stories of the wireless will find in this tale of a wireless spy hunt some characters with which they are already familiar. It is the story of the boys' working reserve and of its patriotic service. (Wilde.)

BOB THORPE. SKY FIGHTER in the Lafayette Flying Corps. Austin Bishop takes two American boys rapidly thru the numerous adventures of their training and to the front, where they serve as combat pilots in a French squadron, known as Squad 98, and find themselves in the thickest of the fight. There is an underlying mystery about a German spy, and an account of secret service work. The author of the book knows aviation thru two years of piloting on the French and Italian fronts, and this is the first-hand account of the experiences of a fighting airman. (Harcourt, B. & H.)
