Today What Is Lenin? A Book Reviewed. By Arthur Brisbane The most mysterious, important character of the world to-day is Vladimir Ilyich Ulianov, known as Lenin, although that is not his name. It is one of many names signed by him to books and pam. phlets in days when any one might have cost his life. Now HE decides in Russia who shall lose his life and who shall keep it. No matter what else he may be, Lenin is leader of the greatest, strangest and at this moment most consecutively successful revolution that the world has seen. He may be murdered before this sees print. He may live as other revolutionists have done to see revolution become government. He represents a definite policy, is head of the first revolution of conséquence that ever started with workmen. Whatever Lenin may be, however he may end, the intelligent man wants to know about him, as he would want to know about a Messiah, if he arrived, or about the Black Death, if it came creeping from Asia. To get information about a man ask his friends. If interested in mice, you would not question a dear old lady that grabs her skirts and jumps on a chair when a baby mouse appears. She is not a good mouse judge. To learn about Lenin, read a hook by his friends, though you may read too much praise. This is a review of "Lenin, the Man and His Work," written by Albert. Rhys Williams, published by Scott & Seltzer, containing, besides Mr. Williams's own story. conversations and impressions brought from Lenin by Raymond Robins, who representoed this Government and the Red Cross in Russia, and an excellent, if too enthusiastic, short treatise by Arthur Ranscme. DUFFY Chaplain of the 165th Infantry With an Historical Appendix by Joyce Kilmer Here is the most brilliant Padre's story of the war. It is a living record of the "Fighting 69th" and other units of the Rainbow Division set down in dramatic form day by day, just as things happened. The beloved Chaplain knew his men, he was "one of them" and his pages are literally bristling with their names, references to individual deeds, stories of brave, touching and amusing incidents. It is not so much the story of some regiments, but of the men who made them glorious. Everyone who was in the Division, all their friends and relatives will buy it. Besides the historical appendix by Joyce Kilmer, there is a complete list of all Citations and Engagements, the Regimental Record and Decorations and a complete list of the officers. DUTTON & COMPANY 681 FIFTH AVENUE NEW YORK CITY "Thornton W. Burgess' Masterpiece" THE BURGESS BIRD BOOK FOR CHILDREN A Review by America's Leading Naturalist Dr. WILLIAM T. HORNADAY Director, New York Zoological Society "For a number of years parents have been asking me, 'What is the best book about birds for little children?' And that question has caused me much trouble. Now, 'The Burgess Bird Book for Children' is the answer. "Every page teems with interesting facts in bird lore, so deftly inserted in the story that their presence there is a joy. There is no formal descriptive matter, and no fine type text of any kind. The book is a series of stories, all told by the birds themselves with the assistance of Peter Rabbit, Johnny Chuck, Striped Chipmunk, and the few other old fourfooted favorites. The vivacity of it all is irresistible, and the child that cannot be lured into bird-land by this book is fit for treason, stratagems and spoils. "The new bird book is its author's masterpiece. Of course it is written in the personal-narrative style of 'The Bedtime Stories,' and it represents the author at his best. As a children's book of birds, it is a st-tely volume, and it will last Anxious Mother' through many a long day. Fifty-ei, ht species of birds are so thoroughly treated that each of them receive the honor of a colored picture by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, but scores of other species appear independently. "If there is anything in Mr. Burgess' text that merits criticism, we have failed to find it. The book is a distinct triumph, in text and in pictures. It rings true, and it is by far the best bird book for children that we ever have seen. In fact, it is the very book that Anxious Mother,' the children ard the booksellers have all been awaiting, for twenty years or more. The Leading Juvenile Book for the "Nothing that will come out in the way of books for children will be any more worthwhile than Th. Burgess Bird Book for Children.' Mr. Burgess has many books to his credit, but this is the most ambitious of them all. Bird lovers will say that it is the best of anything he has done, and it will undoubtedly receive the warmest kind of a welcome.”New York Times.
