Dans l'un comme dans l'autre tableau, il est facile de voir le tourment qu'éprouve Déjanire en découvrant la perfidie du centaure, qui s'éloigne rapidement du rivage où il a laissé Hercule. Guido, dans sa composition, a donné au centaure une expression des plus ardentes, qui fait facilement deviner son dessein; dans celle-ci Giordano lui a donné un air d'inquiétude, où l'on voit plutôt la crainte de la mort dont le menaçait Hercule, que l'ardeur d'un violent amour. Le héros thébain semble chercher à traverser le fleuve à la nage; il aurait été plus convenable de le représenter l'arc à la main, et prêt à lancer le trait mortel contre le centaure Nessus. As the explanation of this subject, treated by Guido Reni, has been given in no 74, there is no need to repeat what we have said. In both pictures, it is easy to perceive the anxiety felt by Dejanira, on discovering the perfidy of the Centaur, who is rapidly fleeing from the shore, where he has left Hercules. Guido, in his composition, has given the centaur so ardent an expression, that his intention is readily guessed: in this picture, Giordano has given him a look of uneasiness wherein predominates the fear of the death, with which he is threatened by Hercules, rather than the ardour of a violent love. The Theban hero seems to seek to cross the river, by swimming: it would have been more suitable to have represented him, with a bow in his hand, ready to let fly the mortal arrow at the centaur Nessus.
