If all women were the Christians they ought to be, how quickly would the world be filled with the

THE NEW YEAR.

MANY and thrilling are the emotions which agitate the mind when we enter upon a new year. The recollections of the past, our present horizon, the hidden vista of the future, may either light up our path with the halo of hope, or throw around us the shadows of coming evil.

Time, rapid and unwearied in its course, urging us onward in the journey of life, warns us with increased earnestness of the necessity of present action, while the various changes, mercies, and judgments of heaven, during the past year, have been so many way-marks, in the language of God's providence, reminding us of the necessity of having our loins girded, that we may be prepared, when the cry shall be heard, "BEHOLD, THE BRIDEGROOM COMETH."

The commencement of a new year is a season of mutual greetings and kind salutations. Many a long absent one will again, for a time, be housed under the paternal roof; and the reunited family circle will overflow with fresh, rational, and holy emotions. May we not be unmindful of that kind Providence which has preserved us and ours; and while, like God's favored prophet, we erect another Ebenezer, and dedicate it with tears of gratitude, let us humbly enjoy the consolation our present highly favored circumstances warrant. Let us strengthen our confidence in the wisdom and goodness of Him who has conducted us thus far toward that house not made with hands.

If we have experienced the chastening of heaven, and during the past year have buried some of those we loved most tenderly; and if, instead of having had our hopes fulfilled, we have drank the cup of sorrow; and, while mourning our disappointments, have uttered the language of Jacob, "All these things are against me," now is the season for humble and filial submission under
