The special features of the August Bookman's Journal (R. R. Bowker Co.) include "The 'Lost Soul' of Stephen Crane and His Sussex Days," "The Background of the Japanese Print" by W. G. Blaikie Murdoch, "The Poetry of Arthur O'Shaughnessy-and His Life Story," "Letters of Dickens, Thackeray and Shelley, and MSS. of George Eliot," "The Sion College Exhibition," "A New and Remarkable First Folio," and the usual departments well filled with note and comment

Among the fall announcements of Houghton Mifflin Company of interest to collectors is "A Catalogue of Rare Editions of English Poetry from Chaucer to Date," by George Herbert Palmer. "It is doubtful," says its publishers, "if there is in the country another privately owned library of poetry at once so extensive and so rare as that gathered by Professor and Mrs. Palmer. In this catalogue the collection is described with full details."

Capt. E. W. Martindell has revised and enlarged the "Bibliography of the Works of Rudyard Kipling" in order to bring it up to date. The new edition will contain nearly fifty plates together with special details about manuscripts marginalia, proofs, and working copies. At this time, when so many in England and America are interested in the first edition of Kipling, an up-to-date bibliography will be of great value to the rare book dealer and collector.

A collection of books on the bee was dedicated to the memory of Dr. C. C. Miller of Marengo, Ill., at the Wisconsin College of Agriculture, at Madison, on August 13th. Beekeepers from every State in the Union, from Canada, and from a number of foreign countries were present to join in the ceremonies.

The collection will be known as the Miller Memorial Library of Bee Literature and was Lestablished in honor of the memory of Dr. C. C. Miller of Marengo, Ill., who for more than fifty years advanced modern methods of honey production by his writings in bee journals and talks at bee conventions. Donations of books and journals and entire bee libraries have been received from several States.

An interesting correspondence has printed in the literary supplement of The London Times in regard to W. H. Hudson's early novel, "Fan." This novel was originally issued by Chapman & Hall in 1892 under the pseudonym Henry Harford. According to Arthur Waugh, the managing director of Chapman & Hall, Hudson called upon him shortly before his death and secured an undertaking that Mr. Waugh's firm would never re-issue the book, as the author did not consider the book worthy of his reputation. J. M. Dent, the publisher, responded to Mr. Waugh's statement as follows: "The book was unknown to me until Mr. Hudson brought a copy to me personally, and at a later date he came himself and sold it to the firm with the distinct intention of their publishing it in his collected works. I have a letter from him to that effect dated two years two days later than Chapman & Hall's undertaking that they would not in any way attempt to publish the book themselves." Just what caused Hudson to change his mind so quickly about including "Fan" in the collected edition of his works will never be known. It has been suggested that he may have intended rewriting the novel but, of course, this is mere conjecture.
