Obituary

VISCOUNT MORLEY

VISCOUNT MORLEY OF BLACKBURN, Liberal English statesman and author, died on September 23 at the age of eighty-four. John Morley was born at Blackburn, Lancashire, December 24, 1838. He graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1859, and embarked upon a career as a newspaper man. He was connected with The Literary Gazette and The Morning Star, and became, in 1868, editor of The Fortnightly Review, which he directed until he went into Parliament in 1883. He became Editor of The Pall Mall Gazette in 1880. Gladstone made Morley Secretary of Ireland in 1886, and from 1892-95. In 1905, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman made him Secretary 1er India, which post he held until 1910. Ile then held the position of Lord President of the Council until the outbreak of the World War, when he suddenly resigned. As Secretary for Ireland he ardently championed a separate Irish Parliament. His literary work is as distinguished as his political career. It includes: "Edmund Burke," 1867; "Critical Miscellanies," 1871, second series, 1877; "Voltaire," 1871; "Rousseau," 1873; "The Struggle for National Education," 1873; "On Compromise," 1874; "Diderot and the Encyclopaedists," 1878; "Burke," 1879; "The Life of Richard. Cobden," 1881; "Studies in Literature," 1891; "Oliver Cromwell," 1900; "Life of Gladstone," 1903; "Recollections," 1917.

COLONEL GEORGE H. DOTY, for the past five years treasurer and director of Little, Brown & Company, died at Marblehead, Mass. on September 18th after a loss of health from severe nervous breakdown. Burial services were held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery on September 20th. Colonel Doty was born in New York on May 9th, 1861, the son of Captain George W. Doty of the United States Navy. He was educated at St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H. entered United States Revenue Service, from which he retired in 1889 as Lieutenant. During his service he was a member of the ill-fated Jeanette expedition to the Arctic. After his retirement from service, he was for several years connected with various New England industrial enterprises, having charge of many of the interests of the late Augustus Flagg, his father-in-law.
