Short Prayers

TO BE COMMITTED TO MEMORY.

On entering Church kneel down, and say,

How lovely are Thy dwellings, Thou Lord of Hosts! One day in Thy courts is better than a thousand. Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house; they will be always praising Thee.

Ps. lxxxiv.

1. 10. 4.

Lord, I am now in Thy house: grant me Thy grace, that I may worship Thee as I ought to do. Keep me from all wandering thoughts, and grant me the help of Thy Holy Spirit, that my prayers may be acceptable in Thy sight, for the sake of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Before leaving Church, the Service being ended.

Thanks be unto Thee, O Lord, for this opportunity of attending Thy public service; pardon my thoughtlessness and indifference, my coldness and neglect in these and all Thy holy services and ordinances, and take not away Thy Holy Spirit from me, but have mercy upon me, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

On entering a Church

For any ordinary purpose, not for public worship.

Gen. xxviii.

16, 17.

Surely the Lord is in this place : how dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE

SON, AND TO THE HOLY GHOST ;

AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW, AND EVER SHALL BE, WORLD WITHOUT END.

On hearing the Church-bell.

As for me, I will go into Thy house, O Lord, in the multitude of Thy mercies; and in Thy fear will I worship Thee in Thy holy temple.

My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord.

On passing a Church-yard.

O ye spirits and souls of the righteous, bless ye the Lord, praise Him, and magnify Him for

ever.

May they rest in peace.

On hearing the Birds sing in Spring, or other

season.

O ye fowls of the air, bless ye the Lord, praise Him, and magnify Him for ever.

On going into School.

Keep me, O Lord, throughout this day
From idleness and sin;

Teach me to feel in school or play

Thy Presence still within.

This grace on thy redeem'd confer,
Father, co-equal Son,

And Holy Ghost, the Comforter,
Eternal Three in one.

Amen.

When amongst Friends, or in Society.

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, and keep the door of my lips.

On hearing the Clock strike.

Teach me, O Lord, to number my days, that I may apply my heart unto wisdom.

Our time passeth away like a shadow, and we bring our days to an end like a tale that is told.
