THE MACAULAY COMPANY'S
Four Best Selling Authors

[graphic]

BISKRA, the gateway to the Sahara, is about as

far as the average novelist ventures in quest of local color, but LOUISE GERARD, whose "A Son of the Sahara" won immediate success, knows Africa from the Mediterranean to the Veldt Country. In "Jungle Love," her latest novel, she has written another powerful romance of the Dark Continent that gives every indication of outselling her previous work.

[blocks in formation]

"IT'S
T'S really unfortunate that 'The Whisper on the
Stair' is selling so well," says LYON MEAR-
SON, its author. (He is, by the way, the editor of one
of our most popular magazines.) "For five years I have
been dreaming of slipping away to Vienna to bury my-
self and write the "great novel"; now I'll just have to
go on writing mystery stories. Of course its a blow-
but I'm not going to let it unnerve me. By the time
I've written forty or fifty novels I'll have quite for-
gotten the incident, I suppose."

HARRY SINCLAIR DRAGO, whose latest novel,

"Following the Grass" (a pioneer tale of the early Sixties), is already in its second edition, discovered a gold mine in Northern Nevada, and with no other tools than pen and pencil, is able to "work" it most profitably. Nevada was just waiting for some novelist to "discover" her, and she refers to him now as "Nevada's own"-which pleases the author almost as much as the size of his royalty checks.

PLATE IV (HALF)

SOME OF THE APOSTLES

SS. ANDREW AND PAUL

3

1. St. Andrew is always recognizable by
the transverse cross upon which he is be-
lieved to have suffered martyrdom. He,
like all the Apostles, also carried an
open Gospel.

2. St. Paul, as a militant proselytiser to Christianity, bears a sword in a striking position, and the Gospel. His sword, in such pictures, is symbolic of his earnest fight for the doctrines of the "Master."

3. When St. Paul, is depicted with the point of his sword down, it is no longer a symbol. It is an attribute as the instrument of his martyrdom. It will also be observed that instead of the symbolic Gospel, he is bearing as an attribute, his "Epistles" or letters to the Ephesians, etc.
