TALLIS'S EVENING HYMN L. M.

4

Arr. from Thomas Tallis, 1567

All praise to Thee, my God, this night For all the bless-ings of the light,

Keep me, O keep me, King of kings, Be-neath Thy own al- might -y wings. Amen.

1

ALL praise to Thee, my God, this night

For all the blessings of the light,
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thy own almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed,
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful day.

4 O may my soul on Thee repose,

And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
Sleep that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake!

5 Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all creatures here below,
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Thomas Ken, 1695, 1709

Robert W. Dixon, 1875

O Light of life, O Sav- iour dear, Be fore we sleep bow down Thine ear;

[blocks in formation]

Through dark and day, o'er land and sea, We have no other hope but Thee. A - men.

10 LIGHT of life, O Saviour dear,

Before we sleep bow down Thine ear;
Through dark and day, o'er land and sea,
We have no other hope but Thee.

2 Oft from Thy royal road we part,
Lost in the mazes of the heart:
Our lamps put out, our course forgot,
We seek for God, and find Him not.

3 What sudden sunbeams cheer our sight!
What dawning risen upon the night!
Thou giv'st Thyself to us, and we
Find guide and path and all in Thee.

4 Through day and darkness, Saviour dear,
Abide with us, more nearly near;
Till on Thy face we lift our eyes,
The sun of God's own paradise.

5 Praise God, our Maker and our Friend;
Praise Him through time, till time shall end;

Till psalm and song His name adore

Through heaven's great day of evermore.

Francis T. Palgrave, 1865

O in what divers pains they met! O with what joy they went away!
