FOR A SUNDAY AFTER EASTER.

That night the apostles met in fear,
Amidst them came their Lord most dear,
And said, “Peace be unto all here."

When Didymus had after heard
That Jesus had fulfilled His word,
He doubted if it were the Lord.

Hallelujah.

Hallelujah.

Thomas, behold my side," said He,
My Hands, my Feet, my Body see,

And doubt not but believe in Me." Hallelujah.

No longer Thomas then denied,

He saw the Hands, the Feet, the Side,
Thou art my Lord, my God," he cried.

66

Blessed are they who have not seen,

Hallelujah.

And yet whose faith hath constant been,

In life eternal they shall reign.
On this most holy day of days,

Hallelujah.

Be laud, and jubilee, and praise;

To God both hearts and voices raise.

FOR A SUNDAY AFTER EASTER.

Hallelujah.

L. M.

O day of days! shall hearts set free
No minstrel rapture find for thee?
Thou art the Sun of other days,
They shine by giving back thy rays:
Enthroned in thy sovereign sphere
Thou sheddest thy light on all the year;
Sundays by thee more glorious break,
An Easter Day in every week:

FOR A WEEKDAY AFTER EASTER.

And week days, following in their train,
The fulness of thy blessing gain,
Till all, both resting and employ,
Be one Lord's day of holy joy.

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Be honour, praise, and glory given,
By all on earth, and all in heaven.

Also Hymns 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76.

FOR A WEEKDAY AFTER EASTER.

Oh! joy to Mary first allowed,

L. M.

When roused from weeping o'er His shroud,
By His own calm soul-soothing tone,
Breathing her name, as still His own!

Joy to the faithful Three renewed
As their glad errand they pursued!
Happy, who so Christ's word convey,
That He may meet them on their way!

So is it still to holy tears,
In lonely hours, Christ risen appears:
In social hours, who Christ would see
Must turn all tasks to Charity.

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Be honour, praise, and glory given,
By all on earth, and all in heaven.

[blocks in formation]

Lo! the heaven its Lord receives, Hallelujah! Yet He loves the earth He leaves, Hallelujah! Though returning to His throne,

Still He calls mankind His own.

Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!

See, He lifts His hands above,

Hallelujah!

See, He shows the prints of love, Hallelujah!

Hark His gracious lips bestow

Hallelujah!

Blessings on His church below.

Hallelujah!

Lord, though parted from our sight, Hallelujah!

Far above yon azure height,

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

Grant our hearts may thither rise, Seeking Thee above the skies. 37

P. M.

The Lord ascendeth up on high,
The Lord hath triumphed gloriously,
In power and might excelling:
The grave and hell are captive led,
Lo! He returns, our glorious Head,
To His eternal dwelling.

THE SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION DAY.

The heavens with joy receive their Lord,
By saints, by angel hosts adored;
O day of exultation!

O earth! adore Thy glorious King,
His rising, His Ascension sing,
With grateful adoration.

Our great High Priest hath gone before,
Now on His Church, His grace

And still His love He giveth ;

to pour,

Oh may our hearts to Him ascend,
May all within us upward tend
To Him who ever liveth!

Also Hymns 77, 78, 79, 130, 131.

THE SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION DAY.

38

Thou art gone up on high

To mansions in the skies;

S. M.

And round Thy 'Throne unceasingly
The songs of praise arise.

But we are lingering here,
With sin and care oppressed;
Lord, send Thy promised Comforter,
And lead us to our rest.

Thou art gone up on high;

But Thou shalt come again,
With all the bright ones of the sky
Attendant in Thy train.

39

Oh! by Thy saving power,

So make us live and die,

That we may stand in that dread hour
At Thy right hand on high.

To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit, glory be;

As was, and is, and shall be so

To all eternity.

Also Hymns 80, 81, 82.

WHIT-SUNDAY.

Hymns 88, 89, 90, 146, 140.

WHITSUNTIDE.

C. M.

When God of old came down from heaven,
In power and wrath He came ;
Before His feet the clouds were riven,
Half darkness and half flame.

Around the trembling mountain's base
The prostrate people lay;

A day of wrath, and not of grace ;
A dim and dreadful day.

But when He came the second time,
He came in power and love,
Softer than gale at morning prime
Hovered His holy Dove.
