DEVOTIONAL HYMNS.

The frequent Repetition of these Hymns, during the Intervals of celebrating the Holy Communion, will serve to awaken and keep alive the devout Affections which the Participations of that divine Ordinance has such a Tendency to excite.

Humiliating Reflections.. WHEN I survey the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God, All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

See! from his head, his hands, and feet,

Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,

Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small:Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Bread of Life.

CHRIST is the only bread of life

To sinful mortals giv'n,
Prefigur'd in the wilderness,
By manna rain'd from heav'n.

Whoe'er by faith receives his flesh
Shall draw celestial breath:
Whoever drinks his sacred blood
Shall never taste of death.

Approach, ye hungry, thirsty souls,
Approach the Gospel feast;
For here the poorest may appear
As an accepted guest.

The love of your exalted Head
With glad consent record;
And hasten to commemorate
The Supper of your Lord.

The chalice of salvation take,
The proffer'd bread accept;
Lest God in anger should arise,
And punish your neglect.

M

Communion with Christ.

JESUS invites his saints

To meet around his board; There pardon'd sinners sweetly hold Communion with their Lord.

For food he gives his flesh;
He bids us drink his blood:
Amazing favour! matchless grace
Of our incarnate God!

The holy bread and wine
Maintains our fainting breath,
By union with our living Lord,
And int'rest in his death.

We are but sev'ral parts

Of the same broken bread; One body hath its sev'ral limbs, But JESUS is the head.

Let all our pow'rs be join'd
His glorious name to raise;
Let Gratitude fill ev'ry mind,
And ev'ry voice be praise.

Institution of the Lord's Supper.

TWAS on that dark, and doleful

night,

When pow'rs of earth and hell arose Against the Son of God's delight, And friends betrayed him to his foes,

Before the mournful scene began, He took the bread, and bless'd, and brake,

What love through all his actions ran; What wondrous words of grace he spake!

"This is my body, broke for sin; Receive and eat the living food:"Then took the cup, and bless'd the wine; ""Tis the new cov'nant of my blood."

"In mem❜ry of your dying friend, Meet at my table, and record (Ye and your seed, till time shall end,) The love of your departed Lord."

Jesus, thy feast we celebrate,

We show thy death, we sing thy name, And hope we may hereafter eat The marriage supper of the Lamb,

Christ's dying Love.

How condescending, and how kind, Was God's co-equal Son!

Our mis❜ry reach'd his heav'nly mind, And pity brought him down.

He sunk beneath our heavy woes
To raise us to his throne:
There's not a gift his hand bestows,
But costs his heart a groan.

This was compassion like a God,
That when the Saviour knew
The price of pardon was his blood,
His pity ne'er withdrew.

Now though he reigns exalted high,
His love is still as great:

Well he remember Calvary,

Nor lets his saints forget.

Here let our hearts begin to melt,
While we his death record;

And, with our joy for pardon'd guilt,
Mourn that we pierc'd the Lord,
