PREFACE. THE Essays composing this volume have nearly all appeared in Reviews or Magazines during the last few years. The topics discussed in them are all, I believe, amongst those upon which opinion is now forming. The principle running through them, which I earnestly desire to commend by these illustrations to those who would arrive at the truth on questions of theology and social morality, is that instruction ought to be humbly sought, and by Christians more reverently than by any others, from the progressive development of life and knowledge. |
