No. 12.

SENATE.

STATE OF MAINE.

RESOLVES in relation to the Mexican War.

Resolved, That upon Mexico are justly chargeable 2 all the evils and calamities of the present war. She 3 has perpetrated a long train of injuries, depredations, 4 and outrages upon our citizens; she has violated her 5 faith, pledged to our nation by the most solemn treaty 6 stipulations; she has added insult to injury, by spurn7 ing our repeated friendly propositions for an amicable 8 adjustment of our difficulties with her; and, finally, 9 she has precipitated the two countries into actual 10 war, by the deliberate murder of our citizens, and an 11 unprovoked attack upon our army.

Resolved, That while our national administration, 2 by its patience and forbearance with Mexico, after S having endured a long series of unprovoked injuries

4 and indignities, is justly entitled to the commendation 5 and thanks of the friends of peace throughout the 6 civilized world; it will receive the admiration, and is 7 entitled to the support, of every friend of our country, 8 for the consummate ability with which it has planned, 9 and the unexampled vigor and success with which it 10 has directed, the military operations of the nation, 11 since the commencement of the war.

Resolved, That when our nation is involved in war 2 with a foreign power,-when the rights and honor of 3 our country depend upon the successful issue of that 4 war, the man who will, in any way, seek to em5 barrass his own government, or, by practice or pre6 cept, give aid and comfort to the enemy, justly merits 7 the unmitigated execration of all patriotic men.

Resolved, That, in the prosecution of this war, 2 thus thrust upon us by Mexican injustice and ag3 gression, the officers of the army and navy, who 4 have conducted our military operations, have, by 5 their prudence, skill, and undaunted bravery, won for 6 themselves imperishable renown; while the patient 7 endurance, the persevering energy and invincible 8 courage of our soldiers, have exalted the American 9. character among the nations, and shown to the world

O that we not only know our rights, but have the will

[blocks in formation]

Resolved, That we shall hail with joy a return to 2 peace, founded upon principles honorable to this 3 nation, and just to Mexico; and it becomes the duty of our government to prosecute the war with vigor, 5 and we pledge to it a prompt and cheerful co6 operation, until such a peace can be concluded.

Resolved, That, while we rejoice at the success of 2 our arms, and behold with pride our victorious eagles 3 stretched across the entire continent, we deplore the 4 heavy loss of life with which it has been attended, 5 and sympathise with the bereaved, who, though 6 deeply afflicted, are consoled by the reflection that it 7 is sweet to die for one's country.

Resolved, That the Governor cause copies of these 2 Resolutions to be furnished to the President of the 3 United States, to the Governors of each of the States

respectively, and also to each of our Senators and

5 Representatives in Congress.
