Peut-on considérer ceci comme un tableau ? C'est plutôt une figure d'étude, à laquelle l'auteur a joint quelques accessoires afin de la rendre plus agréable, et qu'il a décorée d'un nom oriental, qui semble motiver la nudité complète de la figure. Ce n'est pas la seule singularité à remarquer dans cette peinture, et on peut s'étonner avec raison que l'auteur, qui s'est fait remarquer par la pureté et la correction de son dessin, au lieu de suivre les graces qu'a pu lui présenter la nature, se soit laissé entraîner à imiter la sécheresse et la raideur que l'on trouve ordinairement dans les tableaux des maîtres du xv siècle. La couleur du tableau ne présente pas non plus cette vigueur que l'on est habitué à trouver dans les autres ouvrages de cet habile artiste, mais les accessoires y ajoutent bien du charme.

On a vu cette figure au Salon de 1819. Elle a été lithographiée en 1826 par M. Sudré.

This must not be considered as an historical piece, but rather a studied figure, which the author has rendered more agreeable by means of accessories, and set it off with an oriental name, to account for the complete nudity of the figure. It is not the only singularity to be remarked in this painting, as it justly excites astonishment, how an author so distinguished by the purity and correctness of his drawing, instead of faithfully copying the charms and graces which nature would have offered him, could possibly have been induced to imitate the stiff and arid style so prevalent in the pictures of the masters during the xvth century. The colouring besides does not exhibit that vigour we are accustomed to find in the other works of this able artist, but the accessories shed a more than redeeming charm around the whole.

This figure, exhibited at the Lou vre in 1819, was done in lithography by M. Sudré in 1826.
