SHORT ANTHEMS,

FOR

THE USE OF THE CONGREGATION

OF THE

Parish Church of Bromsgrove.

I.

O PRAISE God in his Holiness: praise Him in the firmament of his power.

Praise Him in his noble acts: praise Him according to his excellent greatness.

Praise Him in the sound of the trumpet: praise Him upon the lute and harp.

Praise Him in the cymbals and dances: praise Him upon the strings and pipe.

Praise Him upon the well-tuned cymbals : praise Him upon the loud cymbals.

Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. [Weldon.

II.

HOW long wilt Thou forget me Lord?
Must I for ever mourn?

How long wilt Thou withdraw from me,
Oh! never to return?

How long shall anxious thoughts my soul,
And grief my heart oppress?
How long my enemies insult,

And I have no redress ?

O hear, and to my longing eyes
Restore thy wonted light;

And suddenly, or I shall sleep
In everlasting night.

III.

[Handel.

AS pants the hart for cooling streams,
When heated in the chase,

So longs my soul for Thee, O God,
And thy refreshing grace.

For Thee, my God, the living God,
My thirsting soul doth pine:

O when shall I behold thy face?
Thou Majesty Divine!

As pants, &c.

IV.

[Sphor.

BEHOLD, how good and joyful a thing it is, Brethren, to dwell together in unity.

It is like the dew of Hermon, which fell upon the hill of Sion: For there the Lord promised His blessing, and life for evermore.

[Whitfeld.

V.

BLESSED be Thou, Lord God of Israel our Father, for ever and ever.

Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and the earth is Thine:

Thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and Thou art exalted as head over all. Both riches and honour come of Thee : and Thou reignest over all :

and in thine hand is power and might, and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank Thee, and praise thy glorious Name!

VI.

[Kent.

CAST thy burden upon the Lord,

and He shall sustain thee: He never will suffer the righteous to fall: He is at thy right

hand.

Thy mercy, Lord, is great: and far above the heavens.

Let none be made ashamed that wait upon

Thee.

VII.

[Mendelssohn.

COME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

And lighten with celestial fire:

Thou the anointing Spirit art,

Who dost Thy seven-fold gifts impart :

Thy blessed unction from above,
Is comfort, life, and fire of love:
Enable with perpetual light

The dulness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace :
Keep far our foes: give peace at home :
Where Thou art guide, no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And Thee of Both, to be but One:
That through the ages all along,
This, this may be our endless song.

Praise to Thy eternal merit,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

VIII.

[Tallis.

COME unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of Me: for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. [Smith.

IX.

LORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of Thy name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of Thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

[Mason.

X.

HEAR, O Lord, and have mercy upon me : Lord, be Thou my helper.

Thou hast turned my heaviness into joy; Thou hast put off my sackcloth,

and girded me with gladness.

Therefore shall every good man sing of Thy praise, without ceasing:

O my

God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever

Hallelujah!

XI.

[King.

HIDE not Thou Thy Face from us, O Lord: and cast not off Thy servants in Thy displeasure:

For we confess our sins unto Thee : and hide not our unrighteousness. For Thy mercy's sake, deliver us from all our sins.

For Thy mercy's, &c.

XII.

[Farrant.

IN Jewry is God known:
His Name is great in Israel.

At Salem is His tabernacle :

and His dwelling at Zion.

There brake He the arrows of the bow:

the shield, the sword, and the battle.

[Whitfeld.
