PREFACE. IN the preface to the first edition to this work reference was made to the comparatively unsettled state of Infantry and Cavalry tactics. Since the year 1875, however, when that edition appeared, much has been done towards perfecting the organi zation of all arms of the service, and in laying down authoritatively the tactics which are to be adopted in modern civilized warfare. Many changes have consequently been made which have affected the questions treated of in these lectures, and in this second edition the necessary revisions and modifications have been introduced. The lectures were originally addressed to officers studying at the Staff College to prepare themselves for service on the staff of the army. But the |
