THIS

PREFACE

HIS little book has been prepared for publication with the idea of offering to students and to travellers in Egypt a handy book of reference, which contains in a condensed form information that would otherwise have to be sought for in various large volumes. References have only occasionally been given, but a bibliography of the works consulted has been placed at the end of the book.

A selection only of kings' names has been inserted. In illustrating the figures of the Egyptian gods the form most frequently represented on the monuments has in each case been chosen. It has not been possible, from want of space, to depict more than one aspect or one set of attributes.

The system of transliteration adopted will be found under the heading "Hieroglyphs." In the case of particular names, where the Greek or some other form has become familiar to the general reader, the word has not been transliterated, but the more common spelling has been used, such as in Thothmes, Isis, Serapis, &c. The scarab on the cover is copied from a fine green specimen in the possession of Miss Molyneux,

Pitlochry.
