The glance of wit and mirthfulness, the tone
Of melting music, that was all thine own,-
The smile of earth's best glory-softly gay
A moment and it sinks in dreams away :
The vision has departed—and to shade,
The rainbow hues are gone-the enchanter laid.

Thy sun of life is set-and o'er thy bier,
Softly shall sorrow drop the falling tear,

Our mantling thoughts surround thee, and each eye
Is bathed in tears of woman's sympathy,

The dews of night are on thee-and thy rest

Oh let it, be with angel music blest!

The unseen world is thine,—whilst Hope would rise,
And picture for thy soul, a pathway to the skies

They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.-JOB xxiv. 24.

PROMETHEUS.

SAW ye a spirit, mighty in its range

Beyond time's bourne ?

That traversed worlds of wonder, vast and strange,
On wings of morn?

Heard ye the spirit-language of that mind?
Those mystic themes?

That essence of the soul-that thought refined-
Those waking dreams?

PROMETHEUS.

The polities of earth his eye could trace
With clear survey;

And give to each, its proper dwelling place,
In the clear day.

Sweet was thy name, oh liberty! that sound
Could charm his ear,

When o'er those languid eye-balls night profound
Rolled her dark sphere.

And there his spirit waited, drinking in
Each rapturous strain ;

Whilst thought, ethereal herald, ushered in
His fancy's reign.

On her proud wing he mounted towards the throne
That fills high heaven;

And scaled the limits of that boundary zone
To mortals given.

Then pluming his full pinion, on he soared
To Zion's hill,

And there he sank-and wondered-and adored,
Almighty skill.

He gazed on things eternal; angel choirs
His vision saw ;

He heard their golden harps, their silver lyres
Breathe order's law.

He looked and marvels in the courts above,
Perplexed his soul,

How Satan wandered from that home of love,
Nor brooked control.

Bright bowers of Eden! through your peaceful shades
He loved to roam,

To see, amid the silence of your glades,
Man's first, best home.

Bright bowers, a long farewell! your charms no more
For mortals bloom;

Far from his God, on yon deserted shore,
Man finds his tomb.

But see! a portal opens in the sky,—
A Saviour's love

Lifts up his soul from sins dark destiny,
To worlds above.

Thrice blessed there his portion! better far
Than Eden, now;

Since in God's presence, Bethlehem's radiant star
Illumes his brow.

A paradise regained—a seat of rest

The Saviour gives ;

And there within the haven of his breast,

The sinner lives?

"Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him? For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it? For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt."-JOB xi. 7-12.
