The glance of wit and mirthfulness, the tone Thy sun of life is set-and o'er thy bier, Our mantling thoughts surround thee, and each eye The dews of night are on thee-and thy rest Oh let it, be with angel music blest! The unseen world is thine,—whilst Hope would rise, They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.-JOB xxiv. 24. PROMETHEUS. SAW ye a spirit, mighty in its range Beyond time's bourne ? That traversed worlds of wonder, vast and strange, Heard ye the spirit-language of that mind? That essence of the soul-that thought refined- PROMETHEUS. The polities of earth his eye could trace And give to each, its proper dwelling place, Sweet was thy name, oh liberty! that sound When o'er those languid eye-balls night profound And there his spirit waited, drinking in Whilst thought, ethereal herald, ushered in On her proud wing he mounted towards the throne And scaled the limits of that boundary zone Then pluming his full pinion, on he soared And there he sank-and wondered-and adored, He gazed on things eternal; angel choirs He heard their golden harps, their silver lyres He looked and marvels in the courts above, How Satan wandered from that home of love, 77 Bright bowers of Eden! through your peaceful shades To see, amid the silence of your glades, Bright bowers, a long farewell! your charms no more Far from his God, on yon deserted shore, But see! a portal opens in the sky,— Lifts up his soul from sins dark destiny, Thrice blessed there his portion! better far Since in God's presence, Bethlehem's radiant star A paradise regained—a seat of rest The Saviour gives ; And there within the haven of his breast, The sinner lives?
