vestigation of the paleontology of the Coal Measures, and to Mineral

SCHOOL, THE FAMILY, AND THE CHURCH. By CATHERINE E. BEECHER. Crown 8vo. cloth, pp. 413. New York, 1864. 7s. 6d.

The author has devoted nearly forty years to the education of mothers and teachers. She believes the right training of children to be the most difficult of all human pursuits, and the best modes only to be obtained by a wide experience. She modestly offers this volume as a contribution to the department of religious training. It is, however, a very thorough examination of the subject, and the teacher will reap much advantage from its perusal. It must never be forgotten by those who have the education of children that each and every child is and ought to be a distinct study, and that to attempt to drill a number of children by one immutable rule is opposed to every teaching of nature. It behoves, then, all who fill this responsible office to avail themselves of the experiences developed in books like this.

In Germany the treatment of the diseases of females almost exclusively devolves upon the accoucheur; that is, upon men thoroughly acquainted with the physiology and pathology of the genital organs of woman; and thereby capable of better comprehending, in a scientific and practical point of view, everything which relates to the sexual functions of woman. Professor Scanzoni had a high reputation in Germany as a practitioner, and as a writer was distinguished by clearness and precision. Hence, his work stands pre-eminent among the practical medical treatises on this subject. Appended to each division in this volume will be found most useful Bibliographical summaries of the best literature on the subject.

Thornwell.-The Lady's Guide to Perfect Gentility in Manners, Dress, and Conversation; in the Family, in Company, at the Pianoforte, the Table, in the Street, and in Gentlemen's Society. Also a useful Instructor in Letter Writing, Toilet Preparations, Fancy Needlework, Millinery, Dressmaking, Care of Wardrobe, the Hair, Teeth, Hands, Lips, Complexion, etc. By EMILY THORNWELL. 12mo. cloth, pp. 226 and xvi. Philadelphia, 1865. 5s. Tennyson somewhere speaks of one "whose faith in womankind beats with his blood," the more of such there be the better; but could we believe books like this necessary we fear such a faith would soon have its decadence and fall, for the demand would betoken the arrival of an age of artificiality, affectation, and something worse. To tell a lady to be cleanly, mindful of her teeth, feet, nails, and breath, one would fancy a work of supererogation; to tell her how to write letters on domestic matters, love, marriage, etc., and to frame specimens which look more like the despatches of a Commander inChief or the missives of a Secretary of State, certainly betokens either that the instruction is intended for ladies of another sphere than ours, or that the author's notion of a lady has been derived from the study of an Indian Squaw or an African Amazon.
