INTRODUCTION

IN the following pages the design of the Editor has been to exhibit the general principles, political, social, and moral, of Edmund Burke. In making a selection from his writings he has sought for those passages which convey some general truth, some deep reflection on human affairs, or are inspired by some great and ennobling sentiment.

This little book has not been compiled therefore so much as a contribution to the politics of the day, as in the hope that it will prove of permanent interest
