In a preceding article (No. 55) we stated that very little was known relative to the life of St George. We may add that several religious and military Orders have been instituted under his name. The most ancient is a military Order founded in Arragon about the beginning of the thirteenth century, under the denomination of ST GEORGE D'ALFANE. It was subsequently united to the following.

ST GEORGE DE MONTESA, a military Order founded in 1317 by James III, king of Arragon, in lieu of the Order of the Templars, which had just been abolished.

The most celebrated Order under the invocation of St George is that commonly denominated ORDER OF THE GARTER, which was created in 1350 by Edward III, king of England. It consists of only twenty five knights. The king is always sovereign of the Order, the bishop of Winchester prelate, the bishop of Salisbury chancellor, and the dean of Windsor registrar.

There was also an Order of St GEORGE DE ROUGEMONT, which was instituted in France, in 1390, by Philibert de Miolans.

A community of regular canons was instituted at Venice in 1404, under the denomination of ST GEORGE in Algha.

The Order of ST GEORGE DE MILLESTAD was instituted in Austria about 1468, by the emperor Frederick III. It consisted of military men and ecclesiastics, who made vows of chastity and obedience, but not of poverty.

This picture, the colouring of which is bright, was evidently not one of the earliest productions of Raphael's pencil. It was painted for the duke of Urbin, and has been engraved by Nicholas Larmeslin.

SAINT GEORGE.
