DUTCH SCHOOL. De cocooo F. MIERIS. oooooo HERMITAGE GALLERY.

MORNING.

Most of the Dutch painters' pictures are only faithful delineations of familiar scenes; this is one of the simplest. A lady has just risen: she is standing in the middle of her room, and is dressed in a kind of green velvet mantle, trimmed with ermine. The servant, whose attention appears taken from her work, is amusing herself, looking at a playful little dog, that its mistress is dancing.

This small picture cannot be seen without exciting admiration for its exquisite finishing, its bright colouring, its spirited and delicate touch. The details are all rendered with extreme care the Turkey carpet is particularly remarkable for the exactness with which it is given.

This picture is painted on wood: it formerly belonged to the Elector of Bavaria; it was afterwards in Count de Bruhl's collection, but was subsequently purchased by the Empress Catherine II. It is now at St. Petersburg, in the Hermitage gallery.

Height, I foot 8 inches; width, I foot 4 inches.
