DAVID SLAYING GOLIAH.

The scene of Goliah's death is painted in two different ways upon the two sides of a slate, as we have already remarked at no 5.

The picture was given to the king by Nicolas Giudice, clerk of the apostolical court, and afterwards cardinal. It was presented to Louis XIV the 25th july 1715, a month before that great monarch's death, and it was doubtless at that time attributed to Michael-Angelo to enhance its valour.

An engraving of this picture was made by Benoît Audran, which is in the collection known by the name of the Crozat cabinet.

Cette scène de la mort de Goliath se trouve peinte de deux manières différentes sur les deux faces d'une ardoise, ainsi que nous l'avons déja fait observer dans le no 75, où nous avons dit aussi qu'elle est peinte par Daniel Ricciarelli, nommé souvent Daniel de Volterre.

Ce tableau fut donné à Louis XIV par Nicolas Giudice, clerc de la chambre apostolique, et depuis cardinal. Il fut présenté à ce prince le 25 juillet 1715, un mois avant sa mort; et sans doute alors, pour lui donner plus de valeur, il fut attribué à Michel-Ange.

Il a été gravé par Benoît Audran dans la collection connue sous le nom de cabinet Crozat.
