APPEARING TO ST MARY MAGDALEN.

It was St. Mary Magdalen who affirmed before the apostles the extraordinary occurrence she had witnessed. The first day of the week, that is to say Easter day, early in the morning, the holy women, among whom Mary Magdalen is placed, as we have already mentioned in No 19, came to the sepulchre to weep the death of their divine master; but the angels having told them of his resurrection, they returned to Jerusalem, to inform the apostles of what they had learnt. St. Mary Magdalen, scarcely believing what she had heard, remained at the tomb, and, in turning round, saw near her a man whom she knew not, and he said: « Woman, why weepest thou? For whom art thou seeking? » Supposing him to be the gardener she replied: « If thou have removed him, tell me where thou hast laid him and I will take him away. Jesus then said: Mary... » This holy woman, struck by the manner in which he pronounced her name, remembered the voice of him whom she had so well loved, and threw herself at his feet saying rabboni, that is to say, master. But Jesus said : « Touch me not; for I have not yet ascended to my father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend to my father and your father; to my God, and your God. »

It is this latter scene that Pietro Beretini of Cortonia has represented. The expression of Mary Magdalen pourtrays well the surprise that she feels on seeing him whom she believed to be dead, and the hoped for happiness that her soul feels, on hearing the voice of him whom she had loved so devotedly. To leave no doubt respecting the scene of action the painter has drawn in the back-ground, to the left, the sepulchre on which are placed two angels.

APPARAISSANT A MARIE-MADELEINE.

C'est Marie-Madeleine qui affirma aux apôtres le fait extraordinaire dont elle pouvait se dire témoin. Le premier jour de la semaine, dès le grand matin, c'est-à-dire le jour de Pâques, les saintes femmes, parmi lesquelles on range sainte Madeleine, ainsi que nous l'avons déja dit no 19, avaient été au sépulcre pour pleurer la mort de leur divin maître; mais des anges leur ayant annoncé la résurrection de celui qu'elles cherchaient, elles retournèrent à Jérusalem apprendre aux apôtres ce qu'on venait de leur apprendre. Marie-Madeleine, pouvant à peine croire ce qu'on lui avait dit, était restée au sépulcre, et se retournant elle vit près d'elle un homme qu'elle ne connaissait pas, et qui lui dit : « Femme, pourquoi pleurez-vous? Qui cherchez-vous?» Pensant que ce fût le jardinier, elle lui répondit :

Si c'est vous qui l'avez enlevé, dites-moi où vous l'avez mis, et je l'emporterai. » Jésus lui dit alors : « Marie... » Cette sainte femme, frappée de la manière dont son nom était prononcé, reconnut la voix de celui qu'elle avait tant aimé, et se précipita à ses pieds en lui disant rabboni, c'est-à-dire maître. >> Mais Jésus lui dit : « Ne me touchez pas, car je ne suis pas encore monté à mon père; mais allez vers mes frères, et dites-leur que je monte à mon père et à votre père, à mon Dieu et à votre Dieu.»

C'est cette dernière scène qu'a représentée P. Beretini, natif de Cortone. L'expression de Marie - Madeleine montre bien la surprise qu'elle éprouve en revoyant celui qu'elle croyait mort, et le bonheur inespéré que ressent son ame en entendant la voix de celui qu'elle a tant aimé. Afin de ne pas laisser de doute sur le lieu où se passe la scène, le peintre a fait voir dans le fond à gauche le sépulcre sur lequel sont placés deux anges.
