THE ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS. Although this subject is well known, it may not be considered amiss to recal the passage of the Evangelist, who has transmitted to us the details of this scene of the birth of Christ; because, as it is frequently represented, the programme, so to express it, will be presented, from which, each painter must have taken his composition, and thus the exactness with which he has followed it, may be judged. The angels having announced to the shepherds the birth of Christ, and that he was in a stable at Bethlehem : «< They hastened thither and found Mary, and Joseph; and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it, wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in heart. » In this picture, Guido Reni has ably rendered the feelings of faith and respect which animate the different personages in this scene; he has also thought it allowable to introduce the infant St. John, who joins with the shepherds in adoring his divine master. The cloak of the shepherd, kneeling in the fore-ground, is of red cloth, lined with fur; the Virgin's robe is of a rosecolour, her mantle is blue, and that of Joseph yellow. All the figures are graceful and well drawn; this fine picture by Guido, ornaments the Hermitage gallery, at St. Petersburg. It is painted on wood, and has been ably engraved by Fr. de Poilly. Quoique ce sujet soit bien connu, il paraîtra sans doute convenable de rappeler le passage de l'Évangile qui nous a transmis les détails de cette scène de la naissance de Jésus-Christ; parce que, comme elle est souvent représentée, on aura pour ainsi dire le programme d'après lequel chaque peintre a dû faire sa composition, et on pourra juger ainsi avec quelle exactitude il l'aura suivi. Les anges ayant annoncé aux bergers que Jésus-Christ était né, qu'il se trouvait dans une étable à Bethléem, « ils y allèrent promptement, et trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et l'enfant couché dans une crèche. L'ayant vu, ils connurent la vérité de ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant; et tous ceux qui l'apprirent en furent remplis d'admiration, comme aussi de tout ce que les pasteurs leur en avaient dit. Cependant Marie conservait en elle toutes ces choses, y faisant réflexion dans son cœur.» Guido Reni, dans ce tableau, a su rendre les sentimens de foi et de respect qui animaient les divers personnages de cette scène; mais il a cru pouvoir se permettre de joindre aux berger le petit saint Jean, qui est également en adoration près de son divin maître. Le manteau du berger à genoux sur le devant est en drap rouge doublé de fourrure; la robe de la Vierge est d'une couleur rosée, son manteau est bleu, et celui de saint Joseph est jaune. Toutes les figures sont gracieuses et bien dessinées. Ce beau tableau du Guide orne la galerie de l'Ermitage à Pétersbourg; il est peint sur bois, et a été très bien gravé par Fr. de Poilly.
