NOW READY.

THE

AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL CATALOGUE

For 1879 [Tenth Year].

COMPILED BY F. LEYPOLDT.

The Educational Catalogue has been found so valuable to the Trade, not only as a finding-list, but for circulation among educational customers, for the purpose of soliciting orders, and saving at the same time much troublesome correspondence, that its continuance is recognized as a necessity.

The list this year includes a price-list arranged alphabetically by author's or editor's name, and a detailed subject-index, referring from each specifics ubject to authors of books on that subject, so that the advantages of both a finding-list for the trade and a class catalogue for the use of schools are combined.

Publishers' prices are in all cases given-retail, if retail (in first column); "net," if “net" (in second column); where a "mailing" percentage is specified by the publisher, the "mailing price" is given in the retail column marked with an asterisk (*), in addition to the wholesale price. It having been found impracticable to issue the proposed modified edition, because of the unavoidable discrepancies and difficulties, the double-column edition only is published. A carefully-drawn explanation in the heading, to private buyers, adapts it, however, to the use of the retail trade.

The Educational Catalogue in its new shape, will, we believe, very thoroughly serve the purposes of those dealers who wish to keep as much of the educational trade as possible in their own hands, and work up more, by sending such a list out to schools and teachers. This Catalogue is acknowledged the most accurate and reliable in the market, and, especially in its new shape, will be found by far the most convenient and satisfactory.

In making up special orders for the Educational Catalogue, booksellers should bear in mind that it possesses not only temporary value, but will serve its purpose during the whole year. Orders for editions should be sent to us at once.

CASH TERMS FOR EDITIONS:

With sole imprint of ordering firm, and stitched, per 100 copies, $5; per 1000 copies, $40.

There is no extra charge for printing name, business card, etc., on the imprint page; the last page is left blank at the disposal of the dealer, but any copy for that, advertising special lines or general business, will be set up and printed thereon for $5 the page, or $1 if plate is sent.

NOTES IN SEASON. THE unusual labor of compiling the Educational Catalogue anew and on a new and difficult basis has so outrun our calculations as to time, that this number (a double one, covering the weeks ending July 19th and 26th) is necessarily issued under the latter date. We are making all possible speed with the imprint editions.

HARPER & BROS. send out this week the volume of "Readings from English History," noticed further elsewhere, edited by J. R. Green, in which the distinguished historian has collected, for use in schools, notable descriptive passages from the great English historians. They are arranged chronologically, with introductions giving the general relations of the particular events described, and with explanatory foot-notes. The book will be an absolute delight in schools as a change from the usual Reader. In the Half Hour Series are issued an original paper by Mr. Edward Atkinson, of Massachusetts, on Labor and Capital Allies not Enemies," and several English classics - Scott's Marmion" and "Lady of the Lake," Cowper's "Task," and Sheridan's" Rivals' and' School for Scandal."" These editions are much used in schools for class reading.

T. B. PETERSON & BROS. have just ready two volumes of interest. Raney Cothem's Courtship," by Major Joseph Jones, the author of the well-known humorous works, Major Jones' Courtship," "Sketches of Travel,' Chronicles of Pineville," etc., is full of the

"

same genial humor for which the others are so celebrated, and will be made additionally interesting by many illustrations. "Under the Willows; or, The Three Countesses," by Mrs. Elizabeth Van Loon, author of a“ Heart Twice Won," is spoken of as a romance of unbroken interest, in which the wild and wonderful are more largely developed than in most compositions of its class. In this respect it eclipses "A Heart Twice Won." Most of the characters are American, but the action shifts from the New World to the Old.

"THE Law of Hotel Life; or, The Wrongs and Rights of Host and Guest," by R. Vashon Rogers, Jr., Esq., will shortly be added to their series of Legal Recreations by Houghton, Osgood & Co. It is recommended as positively interesting as a story, while yet the author ingeniously contrives to work in all the laws and decisions bearing on the relation of guest and boarder to host and boarding-house keeper. It is an unusually happy combination of the useful and the entertaining.

D. APPLETON & Co., in addition to Prof. Quatrefages' "Human Species," Stopford Brooke's little book on "Milton" in the Classical Writers series, Brother Azarias' book on "The Development of English Literature-The Old English Period," Haeckel's reply to Virchow on "Freedom in Science and Teaching,' and Tardieu's story of Money," noted last week, have just ready the fourth volume of Theodore Martin's "Life of H. R. H. the Prince Consort," which is the notable publication of the day abroad.

"TANAGRA Figurines" is the title of a thin book which Houghton, Osgood & Co. will soon publish. It contains a description of the statuettes recently discovered at Tanagra, a town of Boeotia, and secured for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts by T. G. Appleton, Esq. It also gives sufficient account of the place in which they were, the times and civilization to which they belong, and is illustrated with heliotypes of the little figures.

LEE & SHEPARD have just ready "A Summer Jaunt through the Old World," a record of the excursion made to and through Europe by the Tourjée educational party of 1878, by Luther L. Holden. It is a duodecimo of 646 pages, and is embellished with a portrait of Mr. Tourjée and 32 full-page pictures which represent many buildings in Europe. It is a straightforward of the most interesting scenes and historic narrative, which many will find interesting and

instructive.

A MINIATURE book, “How to Play Whist," a pocket edition of 24 pages for use at the table, is just ready by John A. Lowell & Co., the steel engravers of Boston, in engraved coversa dainty little bit of workmanship. The New York News Co. will supply the trade.

HENRY HOLT & Co. have just ready Mr. Whitelaw Reid's address, "Some Newspaper Aspects," in a neat 16mo pamphlet; also, in their Leisure Hour Series, "Delicia," a novel by the author of "Miss Molly."

THE price of Sweetser's excellent Guidebooks to New England, the Middle States, the White Mountains, and the Maritime Provinces, has been reduced to $1.50 each by Houghton, Osgood & Co.

WEEKLY RECORD OF NEW PUBLICATIONS.

Those not followed by a number are on the sole authority of the WEEKLY, and are not included in the title-slip registry.
