HOUGHTON, OSGOOD & Co. publish this week the new editions of Hoppin's very clever travelpictures, "Ups and Downs on Land and Water," and "Crossing the Atlantic," reduced in size to medium folio, and in price to $5 and $3 respectively; also a duodecimo two volume edition of the admirable "Life and Letters of George Ticknor," which is generally accounted one of the most interesting of biographies; and the Holiday edition of Pilgrim's Progress," a handsome octavo, with a fine steel portrait of Bunyan, 60 woodcuts, and 8 colored plates. Mrs. Delany was a daughter of Bernard Granville, and a niece of G: Granville, Lord Lansdowne (the celebrated Granville family, of which the late Baroness Bunsen was a descendant). She was b. 1700, 14 years before the death of Queen Anne, and lived far into the reign of George 3d (d. 1788); her letters (addressed to her family and friends) detail at length events of her time, court gossip, describe celebrated personages whom she knew, and give a picture of the manners and customs of the circle in which she lived. She was not only a woman of fashion, but also a Christian, noted in her day for her accomplishments and high qualities of head and heart. This work originally appeared in London, 1861, as an edition de luxe, in 6 vs., and was soon out of print; as now presented revised and somewhat abridged, at a moderate price, little of real value or interest has been omitted.
