NOTES IN SEASON. MR. JOHN W. LOVELL'S announcement in our Christmas issue of a uniform edition of Thackeray, following so close upon his complete edition of Dickens, is something of a surprise. The issue of two such sets of books in one season is certainly phenomenal.

HENRY HOLT & Co. will issue at once the volume on "Zoology" in their American Science Series of text-books. This work is by Prof. A. S. Packard, and it could not have been in better hands. It will be found fully up to the latest data in this important subject. The new novel of "Probation," and Ball's "Mechanics," in the Hand-book series, are already out.

G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS have nearly ready the previously-announced "Life of Gladstone," by George Barnett Smith, which is to be issued in a handsome octavo volume, and will contain two new portraits on steel. Mr. Smith says in his preface that it has been his object to place before his "readers the story of Mr. Gladstone's life, and his relations to the great movements of his time, through the medium of his writings and speeches." In doing this he has also given a most serviceable summary of the political history of England during the past half century.

S. C. GRIGGS & Co., Chicago, have nearly ready their long-promised edition of "The Younger Edda," sometimes called Snorre's Edda, or the Prose Edda, with an introduction, notes, a full glossary and complete index by

Prof. Rasmus B. Anderson, making a volume of about 320 pages. "The Younger Edda" contains the systematized theogony and cosmogony of the Scandinavian race, the two Eddas constituting, so to speak, the Odinic Bible. The Elder Edda is the Old Testament, the Younger Edda the New. Prof. Anderson's previous work in this field has given him a first position as a Scandinavian scholar.

A. D. F. RANDOLPH & Co. will publish immediately, by arrangement with the English publishers, A Hand-book to the Bible: being a Guide to the Holy Scriptures, derived from Ancient Monuments and Modern Exploration," by F. R. Conder, and C. R. Conder, R. E., with six maps, and illustrations of coins, alphabets, etc. The object of the book is to afford to Bible students the main outcome of those important researches which have been carried on during the present century. The maps will be found to contain much novel information, and will serve as a guide to the use of the large engraved survey map now in the | course of publication by the Palestine Exploration Fund.

HOUGHTON, OSGOOD & Co. have just ready Mrs. Piatt's new volume, "Dramatic Persons and Moods," which contains some fifteen poems for and about children, in addition to the main part of the book, which is for men and women who love poetry; Judge Caton's Miscellanies, with a fine steel portrait of the Judge the new and desirable Popular edition of Pilgrim's Progress;" Selections from the Koran," by E. W. Lane, an eminent Arabic scholar, who omitted those portions which are valueless, or worse, and retained whatever shows most favorably and justly the sacred book of the Mohammedans. This, with an introduction by Stanley Lane Poole forms the sixteenth volume in the Philosophical Library. Miss Nora Perry's new book, Her Lover's Friend, and Other Poems," is also ready, and will charm everybody who enjoys poetry that leaps, skips, sings, dances, frolics, or cries maybe, all in measures that one reads easily. This is a noticeable fact in Miss Perry's poems -they are easy to read-and it is by no means a common fact with poems.

promptly, because they come so late in the selling season. The new No Name novel, His Majesty, Myself," is said to be as clever as its title, which is saying a good deal. Two other bright books will be the pleasant chat with which Mr. Wm. A. Hovey, editor of the Boston Transcript, has been weekly delighting its readers under the title of "Causerie," and

"Aloha! a Hawaiian Salutation," in which Rev. Geo. L. Chaney of Boston, gives a lively and entertaining picture of life in the Sandwich Islands, as he saw it during recent travels in our Pacific protectorate. A Christmasy volume, "Holy Songs, Carols and Sacred Ballads," consists of unpublished poems by a very_distinguished English poet writing incog. Rev. John W. Chadwick's book on "The Faith of Reason" will commend itself to liberal think

ers.

For children there is a pleasant book of "Tales from Ariosto," retold for their benefit, of like fashion with "Canterbury Chimes."

WEEKLY RECORD OF NEW PUBLICATIONS.
