"Miss Broughton's new novel, 'Nancy,' is written in something of a different key from its predeIt is difficult to define the change precisely, as the Nancy of this new story is every whit as artless and naïve in describing her own charms as her elder sister, Ellinor, in 'Cometh up as a Flower.' ... Nancy must have been a very winning little mortal, and her new friends will be sure to fall in love with her the first moment they are introduced to her. . . There are little genre bits of description scattered here and there, which bring the dewy English morning, the baked-up mid-day of a German watering-place, the desolate autumn nightfall, vividly before the reader; bits which should not be hurried over, but rather read with the appreciative attention they so well deserve."

THE

NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW.

With the January number, the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW enters on its hundred and eighteenth volume. At no previous period in the history of America or of Christendom has there been a more imperative demand that the highest type of trained intelligence be brought to bear on the problems which the rapid march of civilization presents. Questions involving the very foundation of society, the conditions of all commercial and political stability, the progress of the arts and sciences -questions of the most perplexing character, and fraught with the weightiest issues, require to be discussed with the largest and broadest wisdom.

The aim of the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW is to discuss these important questions worthily-with a fulness and comprehensiveness impossible to daily or weekly newspapers, and more thoroughly and exhaustively than the readers of popular magazines desire. While endeavoring to contribute something to the proper adjustment of troublesome problems of finance, political economy, and social science, which just now challenge immediate and careful consideration, the REVIEW will not be unmindful of the other departments of thought and effort in which intelligent readers take special interest. Scientific research, philosophical studies, geographical explorations, literary achievements, will hereafter, as hitherto, be regarded as coming within the proper domain of the REVIEW, for record, criticism, and original suggestions. In short, the REVIEW holds itself pledged to keep abreast of the intellectual movement of the present age.

MESSRS. JAMES R. OSGOOD & CO. will continue to publish the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, and will heartily second the endeavor of the editor to make it worthy of its past good fame, and so valuable in its varied excellences as to be indispensable to all thoughtful readers.
