ADVENT.

19

1

C. M.

ARK, the glad sound! the Saviour comes,
The Saviour promised long;

Let every heart prepare a throne,

And every voice a song.

2 He comes, the prisoners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

3 He comes, the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure,

And with the treasures of His grace
To bless the humble poor.

4 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim,
And heaven's eternal arches ring
With Thy beloved Name.

COME,

YOME, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free,
From our sins and fears release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Blest desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart!

2 Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a Child, and yet a King;
Born to reign in us for ever,

1

Now Thy promised kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

HOSANNA to the living Lord ord!

To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King,
Let earth, let heaven, Hosanna sing!
2 O Saviour! with protecting care,
Return to this Thy house of prayer,
Assembled in Thy sacred Name,
Where we Thy parting promise claim!
3 But chiefest, in our cleansed breast,
Bid Thine eternal Spirit rest,
And make our secret soul to be
A temple pure, and worthy Thee!

4 So, in the last and dreadful day,
When earth and heaven shall melt away,
Thy flock, redeemed from sinful stain,
Shall swell the sound of praise again.

IGHT of those whose dreary dwelling

Borders on the shades of death,

Come, and all Thy love revealing,

Dissipate the clouds beneath!

23

Thou of life and light Creator!
In our deepest darkness rise;
Scattering all the night of nature,
Pouring daylight on our eyes.

2 Still we wait for Thine appearing;
Life and joy Thy beams impart,
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every meek and contrite heart.
Come, and manifest the favour

Thou hast for our ransomed race;
Jesus, come, exalted Saviour,
Manifest Thy heavenly grace!

3 Help us in Thy great compassion,
O Thou Prince of Peace and Love,
Shew us all Thy great salvation,
Raise our hearts to things above!
By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Every burdened soul release;
By the shining of Thy Spirit,
Guide us to Thy perfect peace.

SAVIOUR, is Thy promise fled?

Nor longer may Thy grace endure,
To heal the sick, and raise the dead,
And preach Thy gospel to the poor?
2 Come, Jesus, come! return again;

With brighter beam Thy servants bless,
Who long to feel Thy perfect reign,
And share Thy kingdom's happiness!

3 A feeble race, by passion driven,

In darkness and in doubt we roam,
And lift our anxious eyes to heaven,

Our hope, our harbour, and our home.
4 Come, Jesus, come! and as of yore
The prophet went to clear Thy way,
A harbinger Thy feet before,

A dawning to Thy brighter day;
5 So now may grace with heavenly shower
Our stony hearts for truth prepare ;
Sow in our souls the seed of power,
Then come and reap Thy harvest there!

[merged small][ocr errors]

Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of His train:
Hallelujah!

Jesus shall for ever reign.

2 Every eye shall now behold Him
Robed in dreadful majesty ;

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

3 Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear!
All His saints, by man rejected,
Rise to meet Him in the air!
Hallelujah!

See the day of God appear!

P. M.

4 Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne!
Saviour, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for Thine own.
O come quickly!

Hallelujah! Come, Lord, come!

ARK! the herald angels sing

Glory to the new-born King!

Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

2 Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the incarnate Deity,

Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Immanuel !

3 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings!
