ORDERS NO. 27.

ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE,

Washington, May 18, 1878.

I.. Before a General Court-Martial which convened at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, May 3, 1878, pursuant to Special Orders No. 48, Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office, March 6, 1878, and of which Captain E. G. BUSH, 10th Infantry, is President, were arraigned and tried—

1. Private Martin Shickel, Company “D,” 4th Cavalry.

CHARGE.-"Desertion."

FINDING " Guilty."

SENTENCE.

And the Court does therefore sentence him, Private Martin Shickel, Company "D," 4th Cavalry, "To be dishonorably discharged the service of the United States, forfeiting to the United States all pay and allowances due or that may become due, and to be confined at hard labor at such military prison as the reviewing authority may direct for the period of three (3) years."

2. 2d Class Private Martin O'Shaughnessy, Ordnance Detachment, U. S. Army.

CHARGE.- "Desertion."

FINDING " Guilty."

SENTENCE.

And the Court does therefore sentence him, 2d Class Private Martin O'Shaughnessy, Ordnance Detachment, U. S. Army, "To be dishonorably discharged the service of the United States, forfeiting all pay and allowances due or that may become due to the United States, and to be confined at hard labor at such military prison as the reviewing authority may direct for the period of three (3) years.”

3. Private Frank F. Hanscom, recruit, General Service U. S. Army.

CHARGE.-"Desertion."

FINDING.-"Guilty."

SENTENCE.

And the Court does therefore sentence him, Private Frank F. Hanscom, recruit, General Service, "To be dishonorably discharged the service of the United States, forfeiting to the United States all pay and allowances

due or that may become due, and to be confined at hard labor at such military prison as the reviewing authority may direct for the period of three (3) years."

4. Private Henry King, General Mounted Service U. S. Army.

And the Court does therefore sentence him, Private Henry King, General Mounted Service, "To be dishonorably discharged the service of the United States, forfeiting to the United States all pay and allowances due or that may become due, and to be confined at hard labor at such military prison as the reviewing authority may direct for the period of four (4) years."

II..The proceedings, findings, and sentences of the General CourtMartial in the foregoing cases of Privates Martin Shickel, Company "D," 4th Cavalry; Martin O'Shaughnessy, Ordnance Detachment; Frank F. Hanscom, recruit, General Service, and Henry King, General Mounted Service U. S. Army, are approved, and the sentences will be duly executed.

The Leavenworth Military Prison is designated as the place for the execution of so much of the sentences as relates to confinement at hard labor, where the prisoners will be sent under proper guard.

I.. Before a General Court-Martial which convened at St. Louis Barracks, Missouri, May 24, 1878, pursuant to Special Orders No. 108, Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office, May 18, 1878, and of which Colonel J. I. GREGG, 8th Calvary, is President, was arraigned and tried

Unassigned Recruit Charles T. Kennington, General Mounted Service U. S. Army.

CHARGE. "Desertion."

FINDING.-"Guilty."

SENTENCE.

And the Court does therefore sentence him, Unassigned Recruit Charles T. Kennington, General Mounted Service, "To be dishonorably discharged he service of the United States, with loss of all pay and allowances now due or to become due, and be confined at hard labor in such military prison as the reviewing authority may direct for the period of three years."

II. The proceedings, findings, and sentence of the General CourtMartial in the foregoing case of Unassigned Recruit Charles T. Kennington, General Mounted Service U. S. Army, are approved, and the sentence will be duly executed.

The Leavenworth Military Prison is designated as the place for the execution of so much of the sentence as relates to confinement at hard labor, where the prisoner will be sent under proper guard.

I.. Before a General Court-Martial which convened at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, May 21, 1878, pursuant to Special Orders No. 5, Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office, January 5, 1878, and of which Major J. E. YARD, 20th Infantry, is President, were arraigned and tried

1. Recruit Walter Brackinreed, Company "D," Select General Recruiting Service.

CHARGE. "Neglect of duty."

Specification-" In that Recruit Walter Brackinreed, Company 'D,' Select

Recruits United States Army, being duly mounted as a member of the guard, and being placed in charge of three (3) prisoners, did, in violation of his instructions, permit one of them, military convicCharles Rutley, late private, Company 'F,' 2d Infantry, to go out of his sight, thereby enabling the said Rutley to escape. This at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, on or about the 18th day of April, 1878.” To which charge and specification the accused, Recruit Walter Brackinreed, Company "D," Select General Recruiting Service, pleaded "Not Guilty."

FINDING.

The Court, having maturely considered the evidence adduced, finds the accused, Recruit Walter Brackinreed, Company "D," Select General Recruiting Service, as follows:

And the Court does therefore sentence him, Recruit Walter Brackinreed, Company "D," Select General Recruiting Service, "To be confined at hard labor, under charge of the guard, for the period of twelve months, and to forfeit to the United States all pay due him for the same period."
