His exploits in that office are beyond the scope of this volume. It simply treats of the campaigns which made the young Englishman worthy of the béton. The fame of his later time fills an ample space in his Memoirs, and in the French annals, but so briefly do history and his own modest pen notice Berwick's earlier career, that I have attempted to string together some waifs and strays of information about his opening trials and growing aptitude for command.
