LES SIBYLLES.

Les anciens ont donné le nom de Sibylles à des filles que l'on croyait capables de connaître l'avenir, et dont les prédictions avaient, dit-on, été recueillies et étaient quelquefois consultées par ordre du sénat, pour connaître l'issue d'un rébellion, d'une défaite, ou pour tout autre événement extraordinaire. De même que les oracles, les livres des Sibylles offraient la solution de tout, dans le sens que l'on désirait avoir. Les chrétiens y trouvèrent donc la prédiction de la venue de Jésus-Christ, et c'est pour cela que ces personnages se trouvent placés avec des anges, dans une fresque peinte dans une chapelle de la petite église de Sainte-Marie-de-la-Paix.

La figure à gauche qui donne à un ange un des feuillets de son livre, est la Sibylle de Cumes; auprès d'elle est la Sibylle persique traçant une oracle sur une tablette. De l'autre côté son la Sibylle de Phrygie et la Sibylle Tiburtine, regardant toutes deux la tablette que leur présente un ange.

Augustin Chigi, à qui appartenait cette chapelle, chargea Raphaël d'y peindre à fresque les Prophètes et les Sibylles. On a cru que les peintures de la chapelle Sixtine avaient pu servir de modèles à Raphaël; mais M. Quatremère de Quincy démontre avec raison que ces deux ouvrages n'ont d'autre rapport que le titre du sujet, et que, loin de trouver aucune ressemblance dans le travail, on y voit au contraire la disparité qui distingue le talent de Raphaël de celui de Michel-Ange.

Ces fresques, peintes vers 1511, ont beaucoup souffert ; la composition que nous donnons ici a été gravée par Jean Volpato en 1772.

The ancients gave the name of Sibils, to certain women whom they believed capable of foretelling future events, and whose predictions were as they say, collected, and even by the Senate consulted, to know the issue of a rebellion, or of a defeat, or any other extraordinary circumstance. Like the oracles, the books of the Sibils, offered the solution of every question in that sense, which those who consulted them were desirous of obtaining. The Christians find in them a prediction of the coming of Christ, which accounts for these persons being found placed amongst angels, in a fresco painted in a chapel of the little church of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Paix. The figure on the left who is giving a leaf of her book to an angel, is the sibil of Cumes, near her is the persian sybil tracing an oracle on a tablet. On the other side is the Sybile of Phrygia and the Tiburtine Sibil; both looking in the tablet which the angel pre

sen's them with.

Augustin Chigi to whom this chapel belonged, engaged Raphael to paint in fresco the Prophets and the Sibils. It was supposed that the paintings of the Sixtine chapel had furnished Raphael with models; but M. Quatremère de Quincy proves correctly, that these two works have no other resemblance, than merely that of the title of the subject, and that so far from finding any analogy in the execution, the disparity of Michael Angelo compared with Raphael is on the contrary perceptible.

These frescos which were painted in 1511 have suffered greatly, the composition here given, has been engraved by John Volpato in 1772.
