enormous mass asunder, and plunge by its severance the thoughtless mariners on it into the deep. At night icebergs are distinguished at a distance by their natural effulgence, and in foggy weather by a peculiar blackness in the air. They frequently are drifted by the Greenland stream far to the southward of Newfoundland, and the President, and many a ship that has never been seen or heard of after leaving port, has probably been shattered by collision with them, and foundered. To approach some of the ice-cliffs is very perilous, as every now and then large blocks become detached, and frequently the concussion of the air from some cause or other is sufficient to make them fall. When Franklin or Beechy once came near an ice-wall, a fragment suddenly slid down as an avalanche, falling with a crash into the sea. Casting up clouds of spray, the gigantic mass entirely disappeared; but soon after, shooting upwards a hundred feet above the surface, it rocked several minutes to and fro, finally projecting some sixty. The circumference was 1,500 feet, and its weight calculated at 400,000 tons. A gun having been fired from a boat of the Trent half-a-mile distant from a glacier in Magdelena Bay, a noise resembling thunder was heard from the direction of the ice stream, and in a few seconds more an enormous mass detached itself from the front, and fell into the sea. The men in the boat, supposing themselves to be beyond the reach of its influence, were tranquilly contemplating the magnificent sight, when suddenly a large wave came sweeping up the bay, which cast their little shallop to a distance of ninety-six feet upon the beach! One of the walls of ice or glaciers alluded to was found to be 7,000 feet across at its terminal cliff, which was 300 feet high. We should gladly have given our readers a further insight into this delightful book, replete as it is with attractive matter, were we able to do so. The table of contents shows the very great variety of subjects embraced within a comparatively narrow compass, an excellent index referring to the principal particulars and incidents of one sort and another that are prominently noteworthy. The learned author modestly states that he has "sought to describe the Polar World in its principal natural features, to point out the influence of its long winter-night and fleeting summer on the development of vegetable and animal existence, and finally to picture man waging the battle of life against the dreadful climate of the high latitudes of our globe, either as the inhabitant of their gloomy solitudes, or as the bold investigator of their mysteries." And he has amply succeeded in those endeavours. The most striking illustrations are the Erebus and Terror among the icebergs, an Arctic forest with the aurora, travelling in Lapland, whales amongst the icebergs, Magdalena Bay (Spitzbergen), an Arctic bird mountain, a reindeer herd, Lapps moving, Samojedes and their dwellings, an Esquimaux watching a seal-hole, a portage in the Hudson's Bay territories, Siberian exiles en route, a group of Russian sledges, a Russian dog-sledge, Cree wigwams in summer, the great Humboldt glacier, the colony of Sukkertoppen (Greenland), Staten Island (Cape Horn), a Patagonian group, a vessel lifted out of the water by ice, polar bears and seals, an arctic fox and seal, walrus hunting, Cape Crozier and Mount Terror in the Antarctic Ocean, Christmas Harbour, Kerguelens Land, and the Strait of Magellan. The animals, whether quadrupeds, birds, or fish, are very cleverly rendered. STALLIONS FOR THE SEASON, 1869. [NONE BUT THOROUGH-BRED HORSES ARE GIVEN IN THIS LIST].
