Explanatory note. Rhode Island session laws are grouped in two distinct classes, to wit: (1) "PUBLIC LAWS," (2) "ACTS AND RESOLVES." Each class is separately listed.

"The Acts and Resolves contain the Public Laws, acts of a local and private nature, resolutions, proceedings of the grand committee, certificates of incorporation granted by the secretary of state and other legislative data. These are issued in pamphlet form by sessions and bound with the annual reports for the year under the binder's title General Assembly Reports,' 'Records,' and 'Acts, Resolves and Reports.' Prior to May, 1900, the last mentioned was in one volume but later the Acts and Resolves were bound separately.

The Public Laws are issued as supplements to the revisions, carrying continuous chapter numbering. They are published in two editions; an annual paper edition, and a compiled edition issued since 1896 at biennial intervals. The annual edition' was first issued in 1873. The compiled edition has been prepared at irregular intervals since 1810, but session laws for the years 1879, 1880, 1881, 1894, 1895, 1896 and 1908 are only found in the annual edition. The laws for 1843 were printed only in the Acts and Resolves.

"Judiciary Act of 1893 and Accord and Practice Act' of 1905 are also part of the session laws, but are separate from the other laws." (H. O. Brigham, Rhode Island State Librarian.)
