CHARTER.

Charter of Connecticut (1662), by Charles II to John Winthrop, John Mason, Samuel Wyllys and others, covering colony of Connecticut. Dated Apr. 23, 1662. [Contained in U. S. Charters and Constitutions, Part I, p. 252, where it is said:"the colonies of Hartford and New Haven had continued separate until they accepted this charter from King Charles, Apr. 20, 1665. An attempt was made in 1687 to repeal this charter, but the colonists refused to surrender it, and after the accession of William and Mary, in 1689, it was again recognized."]

Note. - Albert Carlos Bates in "Connecticut Statute Laws" shows folio copy of the charter printed and sold by Timothy Green at New London, 1718. (1 leaf +1-6 p.) Another folio copy of charter is bound in copy of Acts and Laws of 1715.

A copy of the charter is prefixed to the Acts and Laws of 1750 and to the Acts and Laws of 1769. Another copy of the charter with a sketch of the circumstances, etc., which led to its grant, and the attempt to secure its surrender, will be found in "Statutes, Compilations," etc., post.
