ments of government. The two houses together are styled "The Legislative Council," and meet annually at Tallahassee on the first Monday of January. When she was a territory the governor was appointed by the president of the United States, but under her new organization he will be elected by the people.

IOWA.

A portion of the Iowa Territory was admitted into the union in 1845, as a new state. We have mentioned in another place that congress had the power to make new states out of the territories, and in the exercise of that power she has admitted Florida and Iowa, as we have seen, and there yet remains a sufficient quantity of land in Iowa to form another large

state.

The legislative power of Iowa is vested in a council composed of 13 members, elected for two years, and a house of representatives elected annually, which together, are styled "The Legislative Assembly," and meet annually at Iowa City, on the first Monday of December.

She will also send a member to the house of representatives, which with the one from Florida, will increase the number in the house to 225.

has been secured by the United States to the Indian tribes, as their residence for ever. Each tribe governs itself, the general government interfering only to preserve peace. The tribes draw an annuity from government, as compensation for lands which they disposed of to the United States. The territory is partly occupied by the Osages, Pawnees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, Seminoles, Cherokees, Shawnees, and the Delawares, forming it is supposed a population of more than 70,000. They have missionaries amongst them, and are making improvements in agriculture and manufactures.

MISSOURI TERRITORY.

This territory occupies the terrace of the Chipewan mountains west of the Missouri river and north of the Indian Territory. It is principally uninhabited. The soil on the rivers is said to be fertile, but generally only fitted for the range of vast herds of buffaloes. It is inhabited almost exclusively by Indians.

OREGON TERRITORY.

The Territory of Oregon, to which the public mind has of late been more or less directed, consists of a maritime lowland, and highland terraces. The

lowlands, extending from the Pacific Ocean 100 miles to the first range of mountains, are productive, and the climate quite mild. The highlands are rugged, cold, and better fitted for pasturage.

This territory abounds in rivers and lakes, affording large quantities of fish, the principal food upon which the Indians, who occupy the greater part of the territory, subsist. The country, however, is fast settling. Fort Vancouver, at the mouth of the Columbia river, is a flourishing trading point of the British Hudson's Bay Company. Their trade with the Indians in the article of Fur, is immense.

As in the general government so in all the state governments, every act must pass both houses of the legislature before it can become a law.

The governors of the states have a limited veto on the state Acts, similar to the president's veto on the Acts of congress.

The state laws can operate only in the state which passes them. If the legislature of a state enact a law contrary to the constitution of the same state such law would be null and void.
