THE Hymn Books in the Church are already far too numerous, and therefore it may seem needless to add to the number. I have not however seen one which altogether approves itself to my judgment, many of them being suitable rather for reading than singing; and some of them being entirely devoid of classification: and I have long been waiting in the hope that a good selection would issue from something like authority in the Church: being disappointed in this, I have made a selection for myself. The Psalms of David, as far as they go, appear to me most appropriate for congregational worship; and the new version, with all its faults, I generally prefer to any other; and even where the poetry fails, the language is often well adapted for music.
