Hymns are certainly required for the great Festivals, and for other particular occasions; and the few, which are appended to the New Version of Psalms in the Prayer Book, are very insufficient.

This collection of Hymns is larger than I had intended: but perhaps we had better have too many than too few. It is made (besides a few originals) from a great variety of authors, commonly without any alterations for tho' several expressions in them may be improvable, somewhat of the spirit of an author is apt to evaporate by a change of words.

:

I pray God to bless this humble effort to promote His glory; and to make it instrumental to help the devotions of the Church of Christ in this delightful and important portion of her service, teaching her children to make melody in their hearts to the Lord. J. S.

Psalms and Hymns.

PSALM 1.

How blest is he who ne'er consents
By ill advice to walk;

Nor stands in sinners' ways, nor sits
Where men profanely talk ;

But makes the perfect law of God
His business and delight;
Devoutly reads therein by day,

And meditates by night.

Like some fair tree, which, fed by streams,
With timely fruit does bend;

He still shall flourish, and success

All his designs attend.

For God approves the just man's ways,
To happiness they tend;

But sinners, and the paths they tread,
Shall both in ruin end.

The Doxologies are at the end of the book, and may be given out by their numbers.

PSALM III.

THOU, gracious Lord, art my defence,
On Thee my hopes rely;
Thou art my glory, and shalt yet
Lift up my head on high.

Guarded by Thee I laid me down,
My sweet repose to take;
For I through Thee securely sleep;
Through Thee in safety wake.

Salvation to the Lord belongs,
He only can defend;
His blessing He extends to all,
That on His power depend.

PSALM IV.

CONSIDER that the righteous man
Is God's peculiar choice;
And when to Him I make my prayer,
He always hears my voice.

Then stand in awe of His commands,
Flee every thing that's ill;
Commune in private with your hearts
And bend them to His will.

While worldly minds impatient grow,
More prosperous times to see;
Still let the glories of Thy face
Shine brightly, Lord, on me.
