THE RAPE OF HELEN.

In representing the event which caused the fall of Troy, the artist has chosen the moment, when Helen, seduced by the eloquence and beauty of Paris, thinks she is obeying the Gods by yielding to her paramour. Seated near a ship, Paris contemplates his triumph, but his satisfaction appears alloyed with care; he hesitates. The fatal predictions of Cassandra seem to shake his firmuess. He is violating the laws of hospitality; he is taking off the wife of bis entertainer : he fears the wrath of heaven and its avenging bolts. He sees, in anticipation, Greece rushing on Asia, and Troy reduced to ashes. Helen also appears to feel some hesitation: but one word only from Paris, will soon have dissipated it.

Phereclus, the builder of the ship, holds the rudder and seems to await with uneasiness the signal of departure : but it cannot be long delayed. A fury shakes her torch near Paris, who will follow his guilty intention.

This marble Basso-Relievo is delightfully executed and forms part of the Gallery of Florence. It has been engraved by Née and Masquelier.

ENLÈVEMENT D'HÉLÈNE.

L'artiste, en représentant cet événement, qui causa les malheurs de Troie, a choisi l'instant où Hélène, séduite par l'éloquence et la beauté de Pâris, croit obéir aux dieux en se livrant à son ravisseur. Assis près du navire, Pâris contemple son triomphe; mais sa joie semble mêlée d'inquiétude; il hésite. Les fatales prédictions de Cassandre paraissent troubler sa sécurité. Il viole les lois de l'hospitalité; il enlève la femme de son hôte; il craint la colère céleste et ses foudres vengeurs. Il croit voir dans la suite, la Grèce venant fondre sur l'Asie, et Troie réduite en cendres.

Hélène semble aussi éprouver quelque hésitation; mais un seul mot de Pâris l'aura bientôt fait cesser.

Phereclus, constructeur du navire, tient le gouvernail et paraît attendre avec inquiétude le signal du départ, mais il ne peut tarder. Une furie secoue son flambeau près de Pâris, qui poursuivra son coupable dessin.
