HYMN XXIV.

"We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."-1 ST. JOHN ii. 1, 2.

Saviour, when in dust to Thee,
Low we bow the adoring knee;
When, repentant, to the skies
Scarce we lift our streaming eyes.
O! by all Thy pains and woe,
Suffered once for man below,
Bending from Thy Throne on high,
Hear our solemn litany.

By Thy birth and early years,
By Thy human griefs and fears,
By Thy fasting and distress,
In the lonely wilderness.
By Thy victory in the hour
Of the subtle tempter's power;
Jesus! look with pitying eye,
Here our solemn litany.

HYMN XXIV.-PART II.

"He is the propitiation for our sins."

By Thine hour of dark despair,
By Thine agony of prayer,

By the purple robe of scorn,

By Thy wounds, Thy crown of thorn,
By Thy cross, Thy pangs, and cries,
By Thy perfect sacrifice;

Jesus, look with pitying eye,

Hear our solemn litany.

By Thy deep expiring groan,
By the sealed sepulchral stone,
By Thy triumph o'er the grave,
By Thy power from death to save;
Mighty God! Ascended Lord!

To Thy Throne in Heaven restor❜d!
Prince and Saviour! hear our cry,
Hear our solemn litany.

HYMN XXV.

"The Publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to Heaven."-ST. LUKE Xviii. 13.

Almighty God, the pure and just!

How shall we dare approach Thy throne; When humbly kneeling in the dust

With trembling lips our guilt we own?

In Thy name sealed, to Thee baptized,
And blest with Thy paternal care,
How have our souls Thy love despised!

How mock'd Thee with the heartless prayer!

But Thou hast bid us turn and live,
And stay'd Thy wrath with long delay;
And wilt Thou with the sinner strive;
Yet spurn the penitent away?

O Lamb of God, for sinner slain,
Renew our hearts, our sins forgive;
So cleansed from every crimson stain
Our grateful souls to Thee shall live.

HYMN XXVI.

"There is joy in heaven among the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth."-ST. LUKE XV. 7.

Return, O wanderer, return,

And seek an injured Father's face,
Those new desires that in thee burn
Are kindled by reclaiming grace.

Return, O wanderer, return,

God hears thy deep repentant sigh,
He sees thy contrite spirit mourn
When no intruding ear is nigh.

Return, O wanderer, return,
The Saviour bids thy spirit live;
Go to his feet, and joy to learn
How freely Jesus can forgive.

Return, O wanderer, return,

And wipe away the falling tear,
'Tis God who says "no longer mourn,"
'Tis mercy's voice invites thee near.

HYMN XXVII.

"When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son."GALATIANS iv. 4.

O Thou who Thine own Father's heart
Forsaking, Word sublime!

Didst come to aid a world distress'd

In Thy appointed time.

Our hearts enlighten with Thy ray
And kindle with Thy love;
That dead to earthly things we may
Live but to things above.

So when before the judgment seat
The sinner hears his doom,
And when a voice divinely sweet
Shall call the righteous home;

Safe from the dark and fiery flood
That sweeps the dread abyss,
May we behold the face of God
In everlasting bliss.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

The God whom we adore,

Be glory as it was, is now,
And shall be ever more.

HYMN XXVIII.

"God is our hope and strength."-PSALM XLVI.

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home!

Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received its frame,
From everlasting, Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight

Are as an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends th neight

Before the rising sun.

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be Thou our guide while life shall last-
And our eternal home.

HYMN XXIX.

"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you."-1 COR. XVI. 23.

May the grace of Christ our Saviour,

And the Father's boundless love,

With the Holy Spirit's favour,

Rest upon us from above.

Thus may we bide in union'

With each other and the Lord,
And possess in sweet communion
Joys which earth cannot afford.
