HYMN VII.

"Lighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death."-PSALM XIII. 3.

Again, O Lord, I ope mine eyes
Thy glorious light to see,

And share the gifts so largely lent
To thankless man, by Thee.

And why has God o'er me this night
The watch so kindly kept?
And why have I so safely wak'd,
And why so sweetly slept?

And wherefore do I live and breathe?
And wherefore have I still

The mind to know, the sense to choose,
The strength to do Thy will?

Is it to waste another day
In folly, sin, and shame?

To give to these my heart and hand,
And spurn my Maker's claim?

No! thus too many days I've spent:
To Thee then this be given :
Teach what I owe to man below,
And what to Thee in heaven.

O bring me to my Saviour's cross
For mercy for the past;

And make me live each coming day
As if it were my last

HYMN VIII.

"I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.”— ROMANS XII. 1.

Great God, eternal Lord of Heaven,
Who through Thy mercy freely given,
With sheltering power and saving might
Hast kept us through the hours of night.

O send us from Thy heavenly throne
Thy grace and help through Christ Thy Son;
Our souls with quickening influence tend,
And safe from every foe defend.

Word, thought, and deed we offer still
Obedient to Thy holy will;

O may each work of hand or mind
With Thee, our God, acceptance find!

Through Christ be this our offering paid,
Who once our full atonement made;
O may we, Lord, Thy gifts enjoy,
And ever to Thy praise employ.

HYMN IX.

Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord."

Forth in Thy name, O Lord, I go

My daily labour to renew;

Thee, only Thee, resolved to know
In all I think, or speak, or do.

The task Thy mission hath assign'd,
O let me cheerfully fulfil;
In all my works Thy presence find,
And gladly do Thy holy will.

O may I bear Thy easy yoke,

With patience watch, with fervour pray ; And still to things eternal look

Through all the duties of the day.

Whate'er Thy bounteous hand hath given
To Thee, O God, I would employ,
And, looking for my rest in heaven,
Serve Thee on earth with holy joy.

HYMN X.

"To teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."-PSALM XC. 12.

Glory to Thee, my God, this night
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of Kings,
Under Thine own Almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, e'er I sleep, at peace may be.

dread

Teach me to live, that I may
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful day.

Oh, may my soul on Thee repose,
And in sweet sleep my eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

Praise God from whom, &c.

HYMN X.-PART II.

"When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid."

When in the night I sleepless lie

My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No fears of darkness me molest.

O may my guardians while I sleep
Close to my bed their vigils keep;
Their love angelical instil—
Stop all the avenues of ill.

May they celestial joys rehearse,

And thought to thought with me converse;
Or in my ear all the night long,

Sing to my God a grateful song.

Praise God from whom, &c.

HYMN XI.

"Thou makest the outgoing of the morning and evening to praise Thee."-PSALM LXV. 8.

Saviour, breathe an evening blessing,

'Ere repose our spirits seal;

Sin and want we come confessing ;

Thou canst save, and Thou canst heal.

Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrows past us fly,
Angel guards from Thee surround us;
We are safe if thou art nigh.

Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from Thee;
Thou, our Shepherd, never weary,
Watchest where Thy people be.

Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our bed become our tomb;

May the morn in bliss awake us,

Clad in bright and deathless bloom.
