Haut., 2 pieds 10 pouces ; larg., 2 pieds 3 pouces.

SCENE FROM THE DELUGE.

Although some ancient painters, and Poussin among others, have boldly represented the universal deluge, this terrible event is a thing so hideous and melancholy, that many painters have preferred giving an episode only of the dreadful scene, and that with much reason, as it is the only way of showing figures of a size sufficiently large to permit of their being conveniently studied.

In this composition M. Regnault has represented the earth already covered by the flood, but still leaving some places of retreat among the rocks and mountains. A man in the water up to the middle of the leg is carrying his father, who is exerting all his strength to avoid being ingulphed by the waters. This unfortunate wretch was accompanied by his wife, carrying an infant, but having lost her equilibrium, she had fallen, and, though upon the point of perishing, is still endeavouring to save her precious burthen.

The picture is well coloured, and has been engraved by Audouin.

Height, 3 feet; breadth, 2 feet 5 inches.
