Gette figure de Ceres est remarquable par l'ajustement de la tunique, relevée deux fois et présentant ainsi un double pli qui l'enveloppe et l'entoure entièrement. Cette disposition singulière ne se retrouve dans aucune autre statue antique; elle ne fait pas un effet merveilleux, mais le statuaire a su dissimuler une partie de ces plis symétriques, en les couvrant par le manteau, dont la simplicité fait un contraste agréable.

On trouve un grand mérite d'exécution dans ce manteau, dont la touche est à la fois fine et moelleuse. La même finesse se voit également dans le travail de la tunique, mais avec une recherche qui y répand de la sécheresse, et ferait croire que ces deux parties ne sont pas de la même main. La tête, sans être bien régulière, offre cependant un caractère charmant.

Cette Statue en marbre de Paros vient de la villa Borghėse; elle est maintenant au Musée du Louvre. Une partie de la couronne et du diadème, le nez, les deux avant-bras et les deux pieds sont des restaurations modernes. Elle a été gravée par M. Bouillon.

This figure of Ceres is remarkable for the arrangement of the tunic which is twice tucked up, thus presenting a double fold that envelops and entirely surrounds it. This singular combination is met with in no other antique statue: it does not produce a wonderful effect, but the statuary has found means to disguise a part of those uniform plaits, by covering them with the mantle, the simplicity of which forms an agreeable contrast.

Great merit is allowed to the execution of the mantle, the handling of which is both delicate and soft. The same delicacy is also observed in the workmanship of the tunic, but it has an affectation that imparts a dryness to it, and would make us believe that the two parts were not by the same hand. The head, without being very regular, still offers a delightful

character.

This statue, in Paros marble, comes from the Villa Borghese it is now in the Museum of the Louvre. A part of the crown and of the diadem, the nose, both fore-arms, and both feet are modern restorations: it has been engraved by Bouillon.
